Cholesterol / possible FH

Does anyone know much about cholesterol and possible FH/genetic links

my son had a blood test a while ago and his cholesterol was higher than they would like at his age - he’s 13. I’ve just had mine checked and it’s high too. We’ve been referred to the lipid clinic to see if it’s genetic. But not appointments until summer.

my mother has high cholesterol as did my grandfather had heart disease, he had 3 heart attacks, the last one in his 70s he died from. But lived for 30 years after his first heart attack. My grandfather always said heart issues run in his family, particularly for males. A make relative in his 50s has recently died of heart related issues but did have other things going on.

I know little about my fathers side.

as for me, I’m 32, about 2 stone overnight but have recently lost a stone. Fairly active but could exercise more, diet not the best but could be worse. Total non drinker and never smoked.

I’ve had a lot of health anxiety worrying about this especially as the lipid clinic won’t see us until the summer end I haven’t spoken to my own Gp about my own levels yet!

my results were as follows:

Serum cholesterol: 7.4
HDL: 1.5
Non HDL: 5.9
Ratio: 4.9
Triglycerides: 1.7
LDL: 5.1

is this terrible?!

have also just had my thyroid checked which has came back normal surprisingly as thyroid issues run in my family and I have some symptoms of both an under activethyroid!

I carry the FH gene, both my boys do and most of the female side of my family. Myself and my son take statins. My youngest is 10 so he's not due to start until 12. I can't recommend the lipid clinic enough. We've had loads of advice and support. I didn't get diagnosed until 30, neither had anyone in my family. But I've had millions of blood tests before that and wasn't picked up. I definitely do more exercise now and watch my diet more than I did. The benefits of statins far outweighed the small side effects for me. I wish all of my family looked after their health better. My mum, so is 64 hasn't taken statins and really can't get hers down. She's even got cholesterol deposits on her skin but she's a total anti doctor type! Her levels are really really high.
