Can you feel fibroids externally?

As I can feel a lump in my abdo where I assume my womb is. It doesn't hurt and it seems more obvious before my period. I have confirmed fibroids when I had pregnancy scans, but have no other symptoms like heavy periods. Do I need to go the GP?

My sister had a fibroid and , yes ,she could feel it externally, especially if you lie down .
The fibroid was troublesome in that she bled heavily and had other symptoms that mimicked other ailments. I know that her consultant advised her not to have a hysterectomy as she was near to menopause and once that occurred then the fibroid would disappear. It turns out that she did take his advice and lo and behold she is free from her discomfort. I think it would be best to let your GP take a look and have a prod though just to put your mind at rest . 😊

I couldn’t, no. Mine caused very heavy bleeding and I had to have surgery in the end, but I couldn’t feel them ‘externally’.

Yes, I could could feel my main fibroid. It was in the uterus lining.

I had a hysterectomy because it was still pouring out blood even at the age of 57 (FSH of 13!), and I had other gynae issues, so had a BSO TH. I had a great gynae consultant surgeon on the NHS. Those were the days!

Everyone's different, and it's good practice to see a gynaecologist.

(BSO TH = Bilateral Salpingo Oophorectomy and Total Hysterectomy, i.e. removal of uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries.)

Thanks, I might go to the GP but I can imagine they will wonder why I've turned up as I'm not seeking treatment.

My periods aren't heavy and never have been, although they are painful.

I had two massive fibroids, the size of grapefruit, and couldn’t feel them externally at all, nor could my GP or gynaecologist. Best to get any new lumps checked out.

I would be asking for a rescan - I felt I could touch something solid last Easter.

I wish I’d asked for a rescan rather then risk a ga, I asked my GP surgery multiple times what the fibroid type was as I could have read up on the British fibroid Trust but no, couldn’t be informed until I saw what the fibroid was listed as on discharge paperwork.

OP, please go to the GP as you have a new lump- sounds likely that it is connected to the fibroid, but it needs further investigating anyway. This is definitely worth an appointment- I would expect you to leave with a scan or gynae referral
