Drinking water first thing in morning

Saw friend recently who said she always drinks 2 glasses of water first thing in the morning as it helps to flush out toxins.

Is this true?

No one needs to “flush toxins,” as your body is perfectly capable of doing that itself. That’s one of the things it evolved to do.

Eat well, keep hydrated and your body will be fine.

Drinking plenty of water is good for you in many ways, so by all means go for it.

Cheeesus · 31/03/2024 09:30

You’re probably a bit dehydrated in the morning, so yes a drink is a good idea. Tea is fine though.

EBearhug · 31/03/2024 09:33

I don't drink tea or coffee, so I normally start the day with a pint of water when others would have a couple of cups of tea.

That's what your liver and kidneys are there for.

It's a good idea as you may well have become a bit dehydrated overnight but it's nothing to do with flushing out toxins.

Trixiefirecracker · 31/03/2024 09:36

Yes, your liver and kidneys are there to do that job but it will help it along. Bit like a kickstart to the morning. Lots of research to suggest it’s good for you.

ThereIsIron · 31/03/2024 09:38

You need to be drinking at least 3-4 litres of water a day, regardless of when that is.

concernedchild · 31/03/2024 09:39

I try to do this just to get half a litre in me before work. But it's not going to get any toxins out

Source?

NHS says 6-8 glasses which is closer to 1.2 litres a day.

Surely that depends on the size of the glass...

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 31/03/2024 09:43

My aunt would have hot lemon tea first thing.

Lostsadandconfused · 31/03/2024 09:47

I do this, I finish the glass I have next to the bed at night, then go straight to the kitchen and drink another whole glass before I do anything else.

Not concerned about toxins though, I don’t really subscribe to that theory

Well each glass isn't going to be half a litre. NHS apparently works to an average size of 6x 200ml glasses or 8x 150ml glasses.

@RickyGervaislovesdogs

i used to as well, but kept reading it wasn't good for you, so I don't now. Long forgotten why now, teeth maybe?

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain

it does hydrate you (most people don't drink enough water) & get everything going, so I suppose in a round about way it does flush out the toxins. I'd just nod & do as you please.

Mustardfan · 31/03/2024 09:50

I had high blood pressure, which went away when I started drinking a pint of water first thing.

There is no recommended amount that is globally correct IMV. The advised daily amounts include all liquids, tea, coffee, yogurt, milk on cereal and so on.

Too much water is not good for you unless you are living in a roasting hot climate, which we are not, or are a marathon runner etc. It can lead to hypnatraemia or low sodium. Not good.

I just drink when I'm thirsty, and also have the usual liquids as above. Water intake is becoming an obsession.
