Tsh level of 1.14 - ask for meds?

I've been feeling really unwell and run down for months. Had blood tests on Wed which came back as anemic and low B12 (expected and being treated with tablets)

My TSH level came back as 1.14 which is on thw lower side and I don't know if I should push for low dose thyroxine (my mum, aunts and sister are all being treated for umderactive thyroid)

I have some symptoms but the overlap with the anemia - tired all of the time, brain fog, feeling the cold, feeling depressed and anxious.

I'm struggling to find any useful information and it's extremely difficult to get a GP appointment at my surgery at the moment. Can anyone advise please?

Your tsh is fine. It's nicely in range. If it was higher than 5 then you'd be moving towards hypothyroid and then would need thyroxine.
The symptoms that you describe sound like they're caused by low iron. If you've been prescribed iron supplements it can take a while to feel better.

That looks like very good levels. The symptoms you describe would mean under active thyroid and in that case your levels would be above 5 and you’d take medication to get them down.

A high TSH indicates hypothyroidism.......

1-2 is optimal range?

Applestrudelist · 30/03/2024 22:52

A low TSH means you have too much thyroxine… those symptoms you describe usually come with a high TSH…. Mine was 49 when I was diagnosed… I take thyroxine to bring my levels to below 2 so I don’t get them. Your tsh is spot on already… you can’t bring it down further or you will be hyperthyroid (hot, anxious, losing too much weight, can’t stop moving etc).

But you may not be able to absorb vitamin b12 from tablets- if not then you will need injections.

Please be aware that TSH is a pituitary hormone, not a thyroid hormone, so all that test tells you is that your pituitary is not doing much to stimulate your thyroid. It does not tell you whether you have adequate thyroid hormones and your symptoms will be due to something else, or whether you have secondary hypothyroidism.

Only full thyroid testing (TSH. FT4, FT3, TPO and TgAB) will tell you what is actually happening with your thyroid. The good people at Thyroid UK or on their forum at www.healthunlocked.com will help you unravel this.

Also, as someone said upthread, you may not be able to absorb B12 from tablets, but time will tell on that one.
