3yo son had 2 spots on back of neck Wednesday and woke up with more yesterday.Doctor confirmed chickenpox and he is now covered in them Everywhere I read gives you different advice about how long to keep them away from others. It says 5 days in one book then 10 in another. Can anyone confirm this for me as Im going mad already. My 7yo is understandably bored of staying n with us and I feel sorry for him as its his halfterm. Ive ran out of ideas, we have just melted easter eggs and made rice krispy cakes out of them. Where could we go as he isnt ill just infectious? HHHHEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!

Don't take him out! You never know who you might bump into that cpox would have serious implications for.
I think it's infectious until the blisters have scabbed over, btu I am happy to be corrected.
Have you a garden?

shatteredmumsrus · 28/03/2008 14:04

Yes but it has been persisting down all day!Typical. would take him to a public place, i know its dangerous for pregnant women especially. I might drive to the middle of nowhere are let them run wild! (me included)

you have to keep them away from others until the last spot has scabbed over - usually 5-7 days.

Where do you live? DS1 has chicken pox. We live near the beach so did take him there on sunday. There was plenty of open space and no danger of him infecting anyone.

Our local surgery keep them in a special side room, away from the waiting room if you suspect they have chicken pox.

nickytwotimes · 28/03/2008 14:09

Middle of nowhere - good idea. you can let all your frustration out! I dread ds getting cpox, because I hate being in all day too.
myjob, no, yo udid the right and very sensible thing. I think most surgeries have a seperate area for possible cpox cases, but still...

shatteredmumsrus · 28/03/2008 14:10

If I were you i would safely assume it was c pox. I too was waiting for it as 5 children at nursery have had it. I took him to the doctors as he is on other medication and wanted a bit of advice. I took him as soon as the surgery opened as I knew it would be quiet. They were like blisters at first, they have saline bubbles on them tht look like you could burst them. Avoid that temtation obviously!Have you any other children, thats whats killing me. He is BORED! I have no one else here to take him out etc

i went to park when dd had cpox. Went in car and massive expanses of grass, nowhere near playground or any buildings. Cannot see harm in that

shatteredmumsrus · 28/03/2008 18:20

Thx everyone, I took him to a river which was totally deserted so at least we got out for an hour.
Myjobismum - my ds didnt sleep good either, poor things it must be really uncomfortale for them

As a GP, I always advise that kids with CP are infectious until the last spots have scabbed over.

If a child has obvious CP, there's not much point in going to the doctors for a diagnosis unless you are worried that the child has other medically complicating factors. The only treatments are symptomatic and can be bought cheaply over the counter.

It doesn't sound much fun for either of you!

Having a cold at same time a CP is pretty common.

If he has a high temp or difficulty breathing with it, take him to see GP as there is a small risk of CP pneumonia (but I stress, it is small).

Sounds OK for now and you seem pretty sensible.

If gets worse, get him checked out.

Ear infections also v common at same time.
