Adult onset asthma in 40s?

Hello.

Anyone developed asthma in their 40s?

In recent weeks, I've developed the following:

  1. a dry, itchy cough after I spray cleaning spray or perfume
  2. wheeze after exercise (for about 10/15 minutes when I come back from a run).

Otherwise, I'm in excellent health. I'm 45.

Is this asthma? I suppose I need to go to the GP?

My mum developed it in her 30s after we moved and renovated our new house. It doesn't sound good OP, although can't say whether it's asthma. I think it would be best to get checked out.

I did. It sure can be for you.
Asthma has triggers. Exercise, household substances, viruses, car exhaust, etc can have that effect. Best to get a diagnosis.

I was diagnosed with late onset asthma in my 30s. You will really need to see your gp for peakflow tests and other diagnostic I indictators.

Yes in my forties. Until then I was fine. GP said that it was common. See your GP. I also have allergies so take fexofenadine too.

Our dogs, cats, are an irritant too.

I developed and got diagnosed with asthma at age 60 following a prolonged period of throat / chest infections. I was already hugely sensitive to chemicals and scents but choking and feeling nauseous ( not sure if that is linked?). Now I wheeze after mild exercise, it sucks getting older.

Thanks all - really appreciate the replies. Sounds like it's not uncommon, then.
Suppose I'd better get a GP's appointment.

I've read online that if it starts in adulthood it can be harder to control, so I'm hoping that's not the case...

Thanks again, and all the best to everyone with their asthma control!

Yes I did. Always a runner, suddenly struggling for breath in late 40s , diagnosed with adult onset exercise induced asthma, linked to menopause.

ThePoshUns · 24/03/2024 19:56

Easy enough to control, have a blue pump to use prior to exercise

TiramisuTastesDreamy · 24/03/2024 19:59

yes me, diagnosed age 40 - exercise and cold weather / allergies seemed to trigger. Well under control now - don’t really think about it much other than take my preventer I inhaler each night

TerryHall · 24/03/2024 20:13

Encouraging to hear it can be easily controlled for some. I feel slightly affronted to have developed it (if that's what it is) because I've never had any issues before and always kept pretty fit. But I also know it's not got too much to do with fitness, so....

Thanks again all!

Yes, I was diagnosed at 40. I had taken my son to the doctor with coughing and she diagnosed him as having asthma. She looked at me and said ‘you’ve got it too!’ I did have symptoms but had no idea that it was asthma. I’ve been on my inhalers for 20 years now. My son outgrew his.

I went to Tesco late the other night it was very cold. Coming out within seconds I was so breathless could hardly get to the car which was only 20 yards away .

Same thing happened when I went to the theatre walking across the car park.
When we go abroad to arid areas I have zero breathing problems.
