If the Doctor wants to discuss MRI results, is it always bad news.

Just that really. I have just had a message to make an appointment to discuss the results of my Brain MRI. The appointment is in 10 days. Just hoping for anyone to share their experience.

It’s really impossible to say OP. Everyone and their experiences are so different. Can you keep calling the clinic to try to get a cancellation? 10 days is a bit of wait for you for your appointment.

ForNaiceHiker · 22/03/2024 16:02

you had a brain for a reason

so if nothing appears on mri

then investigations need to continue

so certainly doesn’t mean bad news. it means the discussion about what’s going on needs to continue

Dottiethekangaroo · 22/03/2024 16:07

Thank you, I guess I went into panic mode for a second.

Mine was a discharge appointment after mri for hearing issues. It depends why it was ordered.

ButtockUp · 22/03/2024 16:08

Just a thought, if it was anything very serious then they wouldn't keep you waiting for 10 days.

Spirallingdownwards · 22/03/2024 16:10

Mine called asking if they could call that evening. Scared me! Assumed it must be bad news. No they had a cancellation and my results were all clear. I am sure if there was an issue they wouldn't book for 10 days time.

butwhythen22 · 22/03/2024 16:11

I had a brain MRI to rule out issues due to migraines. As a PP said, you had it done for a reason - so now they’ll discuss it with you. Mine was all good and the doctor pointed out what you could see on it and all the reasons why it was good IYSWIM. Obviously I don’t know what your results will be but rest assured they need to discuss it with you whatever it is. Good luck OP, I know it’s
stressful.

It is absolutely unacceptable to make you wait 10 days. Ring the practice and ask for GP to ring you on Mon and tell you the results. You can then keep the appointment for a face to face if needed but they should certainly tell you sooner.

It could be anything minor or worrying but to keep you hanging is not on.

Dottiethekangaroo · 22/03/2024 17:23

My GP practice is so good. This last year I have had so many health problems thrown at me. Without exception the doctors have been amazing. I don’t know if it is because we are in London, but all the scans and tests have been done much sooner than I expected. I don’t think there is a bit of me that has not been checked.

This particular problem was picked up because I was ordering Stemitel and instead of just dishing it out they called me in. The other illnesses have all been picked up by routine checks.

I am looking at it differently now that I have read the MN wisdom.

It doesn't necessarily mean bad news. DD had to have an MRI of her brain as they spotted something on a CT scan. When we got the results the consultant told us that whilst abnormal it was absolutely fine and not an issue for DD. Hopefully it will be something similar for you.

Definitely good news I would say, most GP’s wouldn’t know much about MRI head, so probably reading the report, if it was bad news you would have appointment with a Neurologist I would image. Not clinical, but as a MS patient, I am familiar with the drill! Good luck OP, wishing you all the best! I hope you have positive news.

Good point, but even so (for anyone who might be reading this in the future!), my appointment was with a neurologist and everything was still fine. All the best to you @Roselilly36 💐

Young adult DS had an MRI, he also struggles with anxiety and communication (autistic). He got an appointment to discuss the results and I attended with him. The results were clear so not always bad news. This was also at the back end of covid when hospitals still had a lot of restrictions so you'd have thought a phone call might have been given instead. You just can't predict the workings of consultants.

Good luck, hope you also get good news.

SayMatae · 22/03/2024 20:36

no not at all

even if all clear patients may still want to discuss next steps or why they have symptoms

just a letter saying you’re fine isn’t appropriate and leads to more follow up work

Roselilly36 · 23/03/2024 06:04

@butwhythen22 yes of course you are correct there. Unfortunately, for me I had bad news at my mine.

I’m so sorry about that @Roselilly36 . I have an (unrelated) very serious illness and have had the “bad news” conversations so I can empathise 💐
