tear duct (nasolacrimal duct) obstruction

my 12mo dd has had a blocked tear duct since birth and has been referred to an ophthalmologist. We have been told that most cases self- sort by around the 12month mark but in d's case there is no sign of this happening so she may need a procedure under GA to open the duct. We are due to go back to the ophthalmologist next month to make a decision whether to go ahead with the procedure or not.
Does anyone have any experience of this issue???

I had mine done yesterday!

Bumping and hoping someone with experience of this in babies appears. It's a pretty routine op in adults, thats for sure.

dd2 had surgery for this - she was a bit unlucky and the original procedure failed (but I think that's largely due to her having DS and smaller facial features), so she eventually had stents put in for 3 months.

The initial surgery was a very straightforward procedure - they just push a little plastic tube through the duct to open it up, and that is usually it. There was no redness or soreness in her eye area afterwards and once the effects of the GA had worn off we went home.

Good luck - I was so glad when dd2's eyes were finally sorted, she had permanent conjunctivitis before.

how old was dd2 when she had her 1st procedure? were you allowed to stay with her whilst they Ga'd her?

she was 12 or 13 months, and yes, you're allowed to cuddle your baby whilst they give the GA, and get to hold them in the recovery room afterwards.
