DS has a ridge on his forehead, is this normal?

After a bump on the head today I was feeling DS's head for any eggs, and discovered he has a ridge under his hairline right in the middle about 3 in long. This is not where he banged himself so not an injury - feels like bone. He is 13 months so still has a tiny fontanelle and the ridge comes out of that down to his forehead. DH says he looks like a klingon! Am worried there is some problem with where the bones have fused? Or is this normal?

Bump - no one know? Is he klingon?

My niece had a ridge down her forehead for years and years when she was little, not visible at all now she's in her teens. I think sometimes they just set a bit oddly. My 8 month old has all manner of lumps and bumps towards the back of his head and I swear we've never dropped him or bumped his head! Weird.

Someone will be along in a minute with first hand experience of this. I'm sure he doesn't look like a klingon though.

I would take him for a check..since it CAN be a sign that the bones have fused to early. It probably isn't but that is something you would want to pick up quickly if it has happened!

*too early I mean

Is it like this?

if it is then he definitely needs checked out!

ksld · 27/03/2008 14:55

Yes like that but less pronounced/covered by a bit of hair. Is that bad? What will they do to treat it?

Before you freak out, HereComeTheGirls is referring to craniosyntosis, and it's highly unlikely he has that, esp as he still has a fontanelle.

DD had a small fontanelle at birth, and had a horizontal ridge over her head, and I googled and worried myself to death over it. I was always looking at other babies' heads (and surreptitiously feeling their ridges where possible ) and I can assure you that loads of babies have nobbly bobbly ridged heads.

HereComeTheGirls · 27/03/2008 14:56

Not sure, but I would make a GP appointment to have him checked .

HereComeTheGirls · 27/03/2008 14:57

Yes, I don't want you to freak out, but I think its worth getting him checked is all

HereComeTheGirls · 27/03/2008 14:58

Maybe a GP on here can reassure you as well

HereComeTheGirls · 27/03/2008 15:19

I must add if he had anything sinister or dangerous like craniosynostosis his head would be a pretty abnormal shape so please don't worry

And the last post from me, as I REALLY don't want you to worry - found this from the American Academy of Orthotists:

"Metopic synostosis is relatively rare and must be differentiated from the relatively common presence of a metopic ridge, which is a benign condition for which no surgical treatment is usually offered because simple metopic ridging is thought to be self-correcting"

So don't worry, a check up would just reassure you further

Just wanted to say Thanks for all the replies - even if I am now panicking a bit!

DS2 is developing very normally, walking around emptying cupboards and generally being a pain, so not too worried! The health visitor says she is happy with him and to ask the Dr next time I'm in to have a quick check if he thinks there is a problem...(We are down at the Drs often with DS1's asthma).

Aww please don't panic. I'm sure the GP will set your mind at rest straight away

When ds2 was born the very very inexperienced junior doctor at the hospital thought he might have this. We were worried sick and went to GP who advised having his head measured every two weeks. Luckily, it was growing normally. I would think that if your dss head is growing normally then it is probably nothing to worry about, as others have said, but I would get it checked for peace of mind.
