Is this plantar fasciitis and what do I do?

A couple of months ago, out of basically nowhere, I developed heel pain in one foot. I'm not a runner or anything similar - in fact, I don't do nearly enough exercise at the moment. It seemed to be triggered initially by running around in the garden with my son. Was a bit sore, then went away. Then I went away for a city break and did a lot of walking, and it was horrendous - I could hardly put my foot on the floor by the end of the day.

Since then, it hasn't been quite so acute, but it generally seems to be getting worse - it's basically just painful to stand or walk, and I can even feel it just lying in bed and moving my foot. My heel feels very slightly swollen and firm to the touch, but there's no redness or specific lump. No pain from mid foot forwards. Main pain is on base of heel at the back and sides.

I wear mostly sensible shoes, always now wear supportive slippers in the house, have tried stretching, spiky roller etc. Wear shoe supports and have now added gel pads. Nothing seems to make a blind bit of difference. I'm despairing a bit now - although I'm not a runner etc, I love to walk, but at the moment even a few hundred yards is really painful.

What do I do? Podiatrist as first step??

Hi
Yes Thank You Mrs White, I hope Walt is keeping well! 😉 I've got insoles although my heel feels on fire so any enclosed footwear is uncomfortable. I've sticking with Crocs and oofos ATM, my chiropractor who's started shockwave treatment says Crocs short term is pretty normal and ok.
Incase anyone else is reading I'm also doing
Heel dip stretches
Raised toe stretches
Rolling an iced water
Sleeping with foot splint
Reduced walking and standing as much as possible.
Calf and hamstring massage.
It's very time consuming and only the foot splint provides temporary relief.
I'll update my progress as it seems so common and little is helping in the short term.

Hi there, I wondered if you'd be able to give an update on Shockwave? I've had PF since March and it's gradually got worse sadly 🥺 to the point my feet are in agony even when resting. Hoping to start shockwave next week

Hi yes mine started in March also. Yes I feel shockwave treatment has helped me get from agony to manageable pain. I've had 8 sessions with my chiropractor. Disappointed it's not completely recovered so doing all the other stuff. I think the nights splint also helps a lot. I wish you all the best, let me know how you get on 👍

I have had PF recently and tried absolutely everything I read online to try and elevate the pain and nothing worked. Wearing trainers did make walking a little more comfortable and I wore supportive slippers inside the house.
Eventually after 12 months I woke up one morning and it had gone just like that.

My PF was resolved by doing calf and hip stretches and giving it lots of time.
fascia release by rolling a ball underfoot, strengthening exercises and lots and lots of lower body stretching.
The PF bit doesn’t have its own blood supply so takes ages to heal.

It's mad isn't it. A few people have said they think it just went on its own and they stick it out :/ think it's more you read horror stories of it never going for some people and I'm currently struggling to walk and it's interfering with everyday life, a walk round the shops is a struggle 😫

I feel for you @SMLSMLI felt like I was a cripple, it was awful. It will go though eventually, just don’t buy into all of the quick cures as there really aren’t any 😔 Hang in there!!

Thanks so much, needed to hear this. How long did yours take to go? Glad it has now! I've got two young girls and it's a nightmare as there's just no way you can rest properly

Might have had a revelation and didn't want to not pass it on... I've started using Pure Xtracts turmeric massage oil and over the last three days I've definitely noticed a decrease in my pain levels! Even if it's temporary, it's been amazing so far! I was taking turmeric supplements but they haven't done as much as this!

Brilliant thanks for sharing, I've been using castor oil, not sure if it's helping but allows me to do a deep massage and get into the most sore areas. I will give this a try thanks 👍
I'm currently trying to press into the sore areas during massage, my chiropractor assures me this is good and I'm thinking it's helping slowly. I'll post an update in a few weeks.
