UTI Nightmare

Hi All,

Looking for those with a similar experience or any help with my situation. I have had a UTI for a month.

2 weeks postpartum I came down with a UTI. I was prescribed Amoxicillin for five days and it didn’t do anything. I was then prescribed Pivmecillinam for 5 days which also didn’t work, so my doctor told me to come off them and they would do a urine culture to determine the bacteria causing it.

When the results came back, it showed as ecoli and that Pivmecillinam was sensitive to it, so she aksed me to take it for a further 10 days. In that time my symptoms worsened and I felt like no one was listening to me until I got a fever after day 7, and was then prescribed Nitrofurantoin at the Urgent treatment centre.

This was prescribed for 5 days but I had a terrible reaction where it caused heart palpitations, burning up and a lot of fogginess and nausea. It made me extremely anxious and put me into an awful mental state, so I only managed 4 days at the doctors approval as she said all infection looked to has cleared up even though I still had symptoms.

A few days later, I am still having all the UTI symptoms and had another urine dip, it again said I had no infection and urine was sent off to say it also didn’t.

Now another three days later, the symptoms have worsened. I’m constantly on the toilet trying to pee and it just doesn’t feel like it has gone at all.

I’m terrified of it turning into something sinister whilst I wait for it to show up again on a urine dip so I can try another medication. In addition, I’m a new mum so I feel like this is taking up so much time to resolve it’s really effecting me as I just want to be well and enjoy time with my son.

I feel like I’ll never get rid of it and be stuck in this circle forever or worse end up in hospital with sepsis or a kidney infection.

Has anyone experience a similar situation?

TIA

Hi, I know your post was from a while ago but I came across is while searching for others's experiences of pivmecillinam. I'm sorry you didn't get any responses at the time and I really hope you got better in the end. I have also got a month long UTI but I don't have a new born baby so you must have had such a struggle. hey, sorry you’re going through this. The NHS uti tests aren’t fit for purpose they’re 50+ years old. You need to get tested properly, it’s expensive but if you go with a company called digital microbiology they can do a proper UTI test on you and they check for thousands of bacteria etc whereas the NHS ones only test for a few. They’ve got a great Instagram page. I’d do it asap while this infection is still early and very treatable so you know exactly what is causing it. The scientists there are lovely and really help you I’ve used them a bunch of times honestly they’re fab. I had a bad uti after I had my second and the NHS just kept sticking me on loads of different short courses of abx without knowing what they were treating and it made me resistant so really messed me up. Makes me so angry. Honestly, it’s worth the money. Good luck you’ll be okay if you nip it in the bud now and properly xx

Ps. Don’t go with Focus Medical etc as they’re culture based like the NHS and useless, you want Digital Microbiology or MicrogenDX (but these guys are American although you can order over here but I worry the journey would effect your samples). Any questions DM me I know a lot about all of this xx too much xx

@Cocostardust Great minds think alike! I did the Digital Microbiology test this week and lo and behold there was E. coli in my urine when both the dipstick test and culture plate were negative! I agree they are a great company.

I'm actually a scientist working in diagnostics and I've looked through the literature and it is a disgrace these tests still seem to be trusted 100% by some doctors (though not all)

I'm on my 4th day of Pivmecillinam and still feeling pretty dodgy although I know this antibiotic has Ok efficacy against E. coli and not too much resistance. Trimethoprim and Cephalexin didn't do much and I'm allergic to nitrofurantoin. I know I need to be patient but it is such a nightmare. I haven't been outside for days!

Thanks for your solidarity xxx
