Osteoporosis diagnosis - help!

Hello, I've just been diagnosed with osteoporosis out of the blue. I'm absolutely devastated. My T-score for L1-L2 is -3.9 which looks like its really bad. Can anyone offer me any advice? I'm 58, eat well, take average exercise etc but have a family history of osteoporosis. I'm so upset and can't stop crying.. I'm seeing my GP next week to discuss treatment options but if anyone has any advice I'd be very grateful. Thanks

So sorry about your diagnosis OP, this is tough. I don't have any useful information as such, but have seen several posts on the Menopause board about women improving their T scores through medication and supplements. Have a look, it seems there's a fair amount that can be done. Wishing you well!

Have you thought about hrt? Oestrogen can help reverse it, alongside diet, exercise and vitamin D.

Thank you both for your lovely comments. I should have posted this on the menopause board instead - I wasn't sure where to post. I'll have a look there.
My GP mentioned HRT but said I'd need other medication as well. I'll certainly look into it.
I'm just so upset at the moment and feel overwhelmed.

I posted this on another thread.
I was diagnosed a couple of years back. It runs in the family and I had been on steroids partly due to breast cancer treatment and partly due to rheumatoid arthritis. I had to push hard for a dexa scan and when the results came back the rheumatologist could not have been less interested or helpful. I haven't had help from GP either, other than to prescibe alendronic acid.

I found the Royal Osteoporosis Society very helpful. There are some informative videos on their website about how the treatments work and their nurse helpline is great.

To be honest it comes fairly far down on my tediously long list of medical conditions but the main effect is that I am ultra cautious about risk of falling.
I take alendronic acid. Do see your dentist first as they will monitor you a little more. I've had some gastric problems recently but I'm keen to stick with the AA as the infusions are more of a risk of side effects.

The drugs don't do a great deal to improve your bone density but they can protect against further loss. I had a repeat scan after nearly three years and there was a tiny improvement mprovement to T score -3.6 spine and -1.6 femor.

If you can take HRT that's great, I couldn't because of BC.
