Thyroid help

Was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism about 10 years ago - and have been settled on 100mg of thyroxine for the past 6/7 years. My TSH has always been at the higher end of the reference range but the latest check has come back with a TSH of 5.54 (ref: 0.38 - 5.33) and T4 10.3 (ref 7.9 - 14.4). I've booked an appointment with my GP to discuss.

I'm worried that because my T4 is well within range my GP won't increase my dosage. I've requested an increase before as have never really got on top of my symptoms but am now feel I'm really struggling - weight gain, no energy - legs feel like lead, feeling pretty low. The last time I went for a review they put all that down to my age (peri) but I'm pretty sure thyroid plays a part.

From my research it looks like my TSH should be at lower level if I'm being medicated but does anyone have any advice on how I can approach my appointment? If they just send me away and say to get on with it I think I may cry!

Yep you should be in the lower half of the ref range. I'm not surprised you have symptom on that dose. I'm not sure what the nice guidelines say but have a look at them as back up for your request. I have a good GP but I know people will say are you refusing my request for an increase if so I'd like it documented.

In my experience of this and other health issues you really have to advocate for yourself. Be clear in what you want and that it's having an impact on your quality of life.
