Bilary colic and A & E

Been at A and E today after a sleepless night . Had general upset stomach for a few days and lower back pain which i put down to coming off cgrp blocker medication for migraines ( it stays in system for months and reason for withdrawal is stomach issues and nasuea )
Last night at 4am woke up with ibtermittent sharp pain in upper right abdo - lasting seconds but repeatedly throughout thr remainder of the morning in almost contraction like fashion .
Went to A &E urine sample fine . Doctor examined me and ruled appendicitis out as unlikley and concluded likely gallstones.
Took bloods ( still in pain ) and was brought back in - doctor said good news , all bloods normal and normal liver function .
He concluded bilary colic and was sent hone with codeine . I asked if i could get ultrasound and he refused and said we only ultrasound if blood comes back with markers ? This seemed weird to me considering pain still ongoing .
Since coming home ive researched BC and am concerned the description sounds quite different to what im experiencing - pain is not constant its almost spasmatic and coming in waves and is definitley not what i would call BORING pain . It also unsettles me its still ongoing ?
anyone had similar ?!

Sounds like gallstones. Other clues are clay coloured stools.

My GP rocked back in her chair when I had mine and said “fat fair fertile female and forty.” I said “I’m only 38 and a half.” I had mine removed the following week.

Mine was worse after fatty food, I had a suet pudding that nearly killed me. And alcohol didn’t help either.

@GrandKarber im 34 and slim but definitley fair and fertile !but i have been on a medication whicb seems to come with a host of gut issues . Was your pain sharp and fleeting ? Unsure what to do next really apart from push for ultrasound ?!

They only admit you if there is infection.

Otherwise it's GP to refer for a scan.

Spent ages eating grilled fish and steamed veg to avoid flare ups before the op.

LuluBlakey1 · 12/03/2024 22:40

I had pancreatitis from a gallstone that went into the duct to my pancreas. However that absolutely skewed my blood tests. The pain was unbelievably awful.

Lkakpk · 12/03/2024 22:41

@AnnaMagnani where your symptoms similar ? Thrown me how its described as constant and boring pain where as mine is short and sharp and intermittent.

Get referred through your gp for a scan

Lkakpk · 12/03/2024 22:42

@LuluBlakey1 i assumed my bloods would be awful considering pain but weirdly fine !

@tillyandmilly yes thats what im going to do . Doc said he will write to gp

Your pain sounds completely typical of biliary colic. Not sure why you would disbelieve a healthcare professional who has actually seen you and seen your bloods and instead would choose to
ask random opinions from unqualified people on the internet…?

It’s unfortunate they didn’t refer you for an outpatient scan but I’m sure your GP could arrange that. In the meantime avoid fatty foods as other posters have suggested and take painkillers.

A nurse said that to me. Though I was just over 30 and slim when I had my gall bladder removed.
I had no issues with gall stones up until after having my first child and then losing pregnancy weight very quickly.

Lkakpk · 12/03/2024 22:56

@auberginefrog its not that i dont believe doctor atall , far from it . I was just curious how my symptoms didnt match and wondered if anyone had similar . Not looking for a diagnosis here , just looking for similar scenarios and outcomes as its completley new territory for me .
Thanks for advice

I've had colic (which may be different from bilary colic?) a few times - diagnosed by GP who also confirmed it wasn't a gall bladder issue which was his first thought. It's agony. I can understand why babies scream bloody murder with it.

It's like my intestines are trying to squeeze something through. Definitely spasmodic and in my case usually caused by steak for some reason so I very rarely eat it for that reason. It's sometimes accompanied with diarrhea.

GP recommended Buscopan and I also find rubbing my abdomen clockwise eases it.

Hope you feel better soon.

@CharlotteStreetW1 thankyou !

My pain was bloody sharp and bad enough to take my breath away. Leaning forward or being on all fours helped and it was worse at night. By the time I had my gallbladder out it was a constant sore ache with the odd stab which put me on the ceiling.

namechange1230 · 12/03/2024 23:55

Last year I had the same issue. It felt almost like being in labour and lasted several hours. I didn't feel right for days afterwards, and then started to get frequent bouts of bad heartburn. Doc thought it might be gallstones but ultrasound showed my gallbladder was fine. So we think it's gastritis. Buscopan helps, as does Nexium for the heartburn. I don't get it so much now, and haven't had a repeat of the severe prolonged pain, but it seems to flare up a bit when I'm under stress.

Lkakpk · 13/03/2024 23:18

@namechange1230 did you go to a and e at time ? Im now waiting for a scan , pains not as bad as yesterday but still there !

namechange1230 · 14/03/2024 09:06

I didn't - I was home alone with the kids and by the time I started thinking I should really go to A and E the contractions started getting further apart. I made an emergency appointment with my GP who got me in for an ultrasound a couple of days later. Hope you're getting somewhere today. I remember feeling almost traumatised when it happened to me!
