Operation to correct squint / lazy eye - anyone's DC had this?

We've just been told that DS2 (aged 6) has to have a small operation to correct his squint. We've been going to the clinic at the hospital since he was little with this issue and his astigmatism (bad genes, all four grandparents have worn glasses most of their lives, me and my sister both had this op, and I've passed down colourblindness on to my other DS ), and they've always said he didn't need it correcting, that to correct it would only be for cosmetic reasons, but now they reckon the normal eye is working too hard, and it might cause difficulties later on.

Its a very minor op, just a day surgery thing, and as he's already had two gen.anaesthetics already ,that should not be a problem.

Anyone know whether they need time off school during the following days, and whether its painful afterwards?

Thanks for sharing any experiences!!

I had this op when i was about 7.I'm 36 now so was along time ago.
i think i had about a week off school.I don't remember any pain only abit gritty feeling.
Two things i remember very well, was jumping for joy when appointment came through.I really wanted the op so my eyes would look better. And coming round from the op,i couldn't open my eyes.I thought i was blind, but they were stuck together with gunk from the op.So maybe tell him that may happen.
Good luck

I had my squint done once when I was 11, and again when I was 18. Mine were scheduled for school holidays, but a week off would be about right.
It was def very gritty and quite painful initially (but I did have a lot of muscle moved each time), but that was fine after the first day.
I was really horrendously sick each time, and apparently this is reasonably common.
