MMR JAB - 1 yr old had yesterday and now inflamed (red/hot) around area needle went in

I'm a childminder and one of my mindees had her jabs yesterday (pretty sure MMR but checking with parents). One of the sides has this afternoon become hot to touch and slightly red/raised. I'm pretty sure this can happen and is nothing to worry about but I can't remember so wanted to check. Is this normal and ok for this to happen the following day?

Mindee is fine in herself, cheeky monkey as usual

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

I think it's caused by the measles virus. Probably best to monitor it, and if it gets worse, tell the parents to take child to see GP for it to be checked out.

Twiglett · 26/03/2008 15:11

it's quite normal for it to swell .. IIRC if it grows bigger than a 50p piece you should get it checked

MaureenMLove · 26/03/2008 15:38

Sounds normal to me too. Do you have permisssion for Calpol?

looneytune · 26/03/2008 16:14

Back from school run and soaked. Mindee still behaving as normal but leg still red and hot. It's slightly bigger thanT the size of a 50p, do you think mum needs to speak to GP? I don't have permission today as mum said she didn't need anything yesterday

What time is pick up? If she's OK in herself, then just make a note in her diary about it and mention it to mum.

Twiglett · 26/03/2008 16:24

sorry is this a baby? it's unusual for MMR to go in leg, normally in arm because given after 15 months

I would call the parent and let them know now

Twiglett · 26/03/2008 16:24

if parent wants to take baby to docs tonight she'd probably have to call

pigsinmud · 26/03/2008 16:30

My dd1 had hers the other week. Her left arm was red from injection site to elbow - a long way! She complained it was sore, but was fine otherwise. I'm such a slack mother that I didn't go to gp. It has gone down now, but took almost a week.

pigsinmud · 26/03/2008 16:31

Sorry - just reread and it's a 1 year old not a 4 year old. Ignore me as I'm talking about preschool booster.

I told the mum around 1ish and have been keeping her posted but just texted her to recommend she gets advice from GP (just to cover me as I didn't want to make the decision). She's now phoning GP to ask if she needs to be seen. There were 2 jabs, one in each leg, and it was DEFINITELY MMR, mum just confirmed (mindee is 13 months)

Mo - pickup at 6pm. Reason I wanted advice is that IF mindee is likely to get worse/poorly as a result, I'd hate to leave it til Dr's have closed. I'm sure it's ok as mindee is fine but I couldn't remember what they tell you to look out for after the jab as it's been a long time!

Thanks everyone

Cool, that's reassuring, just couldn't not ask about it as if something DID happen, it's ME that would be responsible for having ignored it! And mum always goes on what I would do but I don't like to say in case I'm wrong IYSWIM.

Thanks again

What did doc say?

looneytune · 26/03/2008 18:11

Dr is calling them back so left it with them.
