Terrible nerve pain

Any thoughts and experiences of painkillers for nerve pain please?
I need a hip replacement and also have advanced arthritis of my lumbar spine, a spinal cyst so will need spinal surgery too.
I currently take buprenorphine 35mcg patches, amitriptyline 80mg.
Stopped my naproxen as it was affecting my stomach after many years use.
Oromorph does nothing.
I was advised against pregabalin or gabapentin which are good for nerve pain because they cause weight gain which I can’t afford or I will never get a hip replacement as I’m already a chubster after years on steroids after cancer treatment side effects and also mental health meds making me eat for england.
The nerve pain has been there for years but is getting much worse. I have barely slept at all for over a week and am on the verge of tears and I am not a crier.
I dread nightimes.
Has anybody taken pregabalin or gabapentin and not been hungrier or put on weight?
What about dihydrocodeine or co-codamol?
Does anything help?
Things are really, really bad. I can barely walk even with crutches and can’t sit for long and now I can’t even lie down in any comfort.

Having had horrendous nerve pain due to a bulging disc in my neck which caused sciatic pain in my arm I would say try gabapentin. I was existing on no sleep and every type of pain killers + alcohol to survive!! Gabapentin changed my life no side effects

@11QR how many mg of gabapentin did you start on? What was your experience? Having hell nerve pain & my dr just prescribed 100mg to start, fingers crossed it makes a difference

If I remember correctly you need to build up dose slowly so I had 100mg 3 times a day for a few days then increased to 200mg 3 x times a day and eventually 300mg 3 x times a day!!! 900mg a day I think is the maximum dose, side effects were minimal and so worth it to be out of pain. When you come off them you also need to decrease slowly. I hope it works for you but be prepared that it takes a while to kick in hence the slow increase of dosage be patient!!

Hi there I has just started gabapentin 300mg 3 times a day for neuralgia after shingles.

How are people getting on with it?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 19/01/2025 12:17

I've been on it for 11 years for trigeminal neuralgia. At 3 x 300mg a day.

No side effects once I'd got used to it.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 19/01/2025 12:28

3 x 600mg actually. :)

Has anyone got over the nausea caused by gabapentin? I tried the lowest dose and it made me feel horribly sick - the nausea was even more debilitating than the pain and that was bad enough. Does the nausea go eventually or can you take an anti emetic with it?

UncertainWife · 19/01/2025 13:48

@Blackcats7 did you have your hip replacement yet?

mabemosty90 · 19/01/2025 20:51

Unfortunately I had a hell time on it. Ended up in hospital with horrific side affects & had so much trouble weaning off it, I was only on it for 4 weeks, I couldn’t stay on it, I was suicidal, never been so mentally low. Had pins and needles in my arms, legs & hands for months after coming off it & electric body zaps. Still get the zaps every now and then randomly. Hoping over time they will eventually stop. Glad it works for some people but jesus, there needs to be more of a warning on the label!!

I'm sorry to hear that, I had horrible side effects on pregabalin but so far gabapentin seems better.
