Can’t get tooth pain under control. Can’t sleep.

Went to hygienist on 27th for routine appt, increasing pain since. Saw emergency dentist Tuesday and gum inflammation and bruxism seemed to the problem. No infection, X-rays taken and appt for custom splint made. Been in varying amounts of pain since. Today though, pain has been excruciating. Nerve in jaw horrendous, can’t eat or drink much . I’ve even lost weight over past week. Also had 2 migraines (probably stress of pain). Used mouthguard over past 2 nights, max over counter painkillers, ambesol, bonjela, cold compress.
now pain seems localised to one tooth and can’t close my teeth together, throbbing pain and still nerve pain. Can’t see anything but pain has escalated since yesterday even. Can’t use mouthguard tonight. Too sore :(
Any tips? I just need to get to Monday with some sleep & sanity!!

It’s been a very rough week!
Monday i had a molar extracted, it was brutal. Puliptis, cracked tooth. Had an ok day after that, Tuesday was sore but less than it had been. By Wednesday i was back to square one (or worse) agony and back to dentist. Dry socket and wound packed. Not a pretty sight by all accounts.
Thursday i managed some make up, tried to rally but Friday in agony yet again and back to dentist, this time given antibiotics.
Slept last night, was ok this morning and feeling more positive. However am bit of pain now! Hoping it is a blip and I am on the right path overall.
Still taking co codamol and ibuprofen regularly.
Never did manage to obtain stronger pain relief. Dentist only suggests what I'm currently on and my GP was not interested. I did feel pretty abandoned. I’ve had 4 emergency appointments in a week!
still a struggle to eat, feel exhausted.
Never known pain like it.

Very sorry you've had to go through all this, OP. I had dry socket when I had my wisdom tooth out. Yes, it's a misery. For a week, all I could eat was porridge.
It probably won't feel like much consolation now, but you will get better.

@ShrubRose I have hope now at least. I’m an expert in soft foods like porridge, smoothie's, soup, mashed potato, scrambled egg and yogurts. Dreaming of tasty foods!

When I had a tooth infection, I was crying with the pain. The best OTC painkiller for dental pain is, in my opinion, Paramol. It is paracetamol with dihydracodeine (sp?). It was the only thing that gave me any relief and I always keep some in the house now just in case! Would definitely suggest getting some OP.

Hi OP,

This might sound strange - but are you absolutely sure it's being triggered by a dental problem?

My DP was diagnosed last year with trigeminal neuralgia - it's where the trigeminal nerve in the face goes a bit bonkers - effectively misfires - and can be triggered by teeth touching together. It is known to be one of the most painful things you can get, sadly. When DP eventually got to a consultant the consultant said he was amazed my DP had only had one root canal treatment and that he'd seen people with an entire row of teeth removed in the mistaken belief it was a dental problem before correct diagnosis..

DP managed to see the consultant via private healthcare - an NHS referral is possible but takes longer. It's not the greatest condition to have but it is treatable and since getting on the correct meds DP has been pain free.

If you feel you're getting nowhere with dental work please look into this - I hope that you feel better soon whatever this is. Flowers

@mynewname0324
I have definitely considered this at various points. My Mum also suffered from this brought about by a bout of Shingles. It’s awful, your poor DP.

I’ve also considered it being another tooth causing a second problem. I’m trying not to think about this too much. It’s giving me the fear.

My FIL is actually a retired dentist, however he has been away on holiday this past fortnight so his advice has been a bit limited (though he did diagnose my problem straight away by WhatsApp message!!).
There’s little he can do but advise and suggest questions to ask.

I’m looking forward to his return!

At the moment am doing okish and trying to be positive.

@Chocochoo I’ve done a lot of crying this week. It does get to you. One of the emergency dentists I saw recommended Paramol too. However Boots don't stock it and then I forgot about it. I might try and get some. Just in case! Thank you
