Slim with hypertension

Glonty · 09/03/2024 21:31

Can we have a thread for those who are slim with hight bp?
I feel like a lot of hypertension threads get full of ppl telling the OP that if they lose weight it will cure the issue.
I'm a normal weight, slim even. Don't smoke or drink, exercise regularly and don't add salt to food
I am 46 and I had severe pre-eclampsia, now apparently its up again in perimenopause.
Anyone else in this boat?
I've been in ramipril, but asked gp to switch me because its caused water retention and bloat.
So trying lorstattan, but I'm wary of what this will cause.....

Elphame · 09/03/2024 22:59

Yes that's me too.

HBP runs in the family, and there is literally nothing I can do to reduce mine. I have no risk factors and do everything "right". I've been denied the 24hr ambulatory monitoring and have a quite pronounced white coat syndrome when it comes to blood pressure machines so I don't know how bad mine is really.

I'm on my third set of drugs but still suffering side effects, the worst of which are intermittent faintness and an unrelenting general feeling of tiredness.

Peeppuandpopo · 09/03/2024 23:33

Yup. Physically fit, decent BMI, never smoked, good diet, but….family history of hypertension and stressful job that involved shift work (nights) for years. Mum had pre eclampsia too, although I didn’t.
Sometimes there’s nothing else you can actually do. I’m on low doses of 2 different tablets but also now on b blockers because I ended up with long Covid which again ‘apparently’ only effects larger unfit folk…..

DancingFerret · 09/03/2024 23:57

I have that T-shirt, it's essential hypertension. I was diagnosed in my 30s and had nowhere to run in terms of improving my health; I was slim and fit. Medication was the only option, and frankly I can honestly think of worst things to have to cope with.

Sadless · 10/03/2024 15:01

I have just started on the tablets blood pressure was fine in September last year now it’s high . I will be 42 in a couple of weeks and didn’t expect to be taking this tablets yet.
but I think some people have to have a heart attack first before there put in the tablets so if I take them now might not have one for a while . I have changed my diet since finding out it’s high but I am not overweight but I do smoke .

I'm very interested I this post. I had a high BP last year and given the 24 monitor. My readings were so erratic but overall said it was OK. I had an NHS check and it's higher again. Going to get the 24 hour machine soon. The nurse said I will probably have to go on statins.

I asked if they would give me 3 months to see if I could change it with lifestyle. I also have high cholesterol.

I'm quite slim, BMI 23, walk 7 Mike's a day, but do smoke.

I'm going to overhaul my OKish diet and lay off my fave things like lots of butter, cheese, mayo, fatty meat.

I'm very interested to see if I can do something myself or if it's hereditary before going on drugs.

have you got a blood pressure machine at home ?

Hedgerow2 · 10/03/2024 18:27

DH (60s) has had high BP and high cholesterol since his 30s and has been on medication since then. He's naturally slim, very fit (has played sport/worked out etc all his life). Has never smoked, drinks only occasionally and eats very healthily.

We have a BP monitor at home as his GP occasionally asks him to keep track of it for a period. So I take mine out of interest and it's always low-normal. I'm a bit overweight, drink too much and don't like exercise. Life's not fair 🤷‍♀️

kittybloom · 10/03/2024 18:38

This is me. Thank you for this thread. I had a BRVO (eye haemorrhage) which led to the diagnosis of high blood pressure. On rampril but bp still too high but I really don’t want to increase the medication dose as it is already impacting on kidney function. Don’t smoke. Drink in moderation and sometimes not at all. Normal ‘green’ BMI and eat relatively healthily. Exercise a bit too. Sometimes feel sad about it tbh as can’t ‘fix’ it as no obvious diet or lifestyle change. I do have a stressful job but tried taking some time off and no difference. One side of the family all had it and history of high bp and strokes so I’ve accepted it is hereditary factor.

The way I look at it - at least I realised via BRVO so on the right meds and monitored. If I hadn't, likely outcome would be major stroke at some point and hopefully I’ve minimised that risk now.

@sadless.
No I haven't. Have you? If so, are you able to suggest one?

Jumping in here, I have this one and paired it with Intelli Wrap cuff, which I find much easier to put on than the "floppy" cuff; it's easy to use and stores readings on my phone using Omron's app.

As a smoker, you're probably sick to the back teeth with warnings about it, so please see this link the spirit with which it is given: for information only.

I had pre-eclampsia and an emergency C-SECTION. MIt wasn’t known at the time ( I don’t think) that this could mean it should be followed up afterwards and my very high BP was only picked up when I had a go on my ex’s FIL new BP monitor (think it was when these were first available ). I ended up in A&E who referred me to a cardiologist and after a lot of heart, kidney and other tests was put on medication. It’s been very hard to control over the years but has been pretty stable for the past 5 years. I’m in my 60s now and have been on 4 different drugs for about 30 years (2 now the highest dose) I’m 115lbs, eat a fairly healthy diet, don’t smoke or drink. At the time I remember the consultant saying I was lucky as most people only discover they have such high BP after a stroke or heart attack. I have an omron monitor. Don’t use it often but it’s useful to have.

@DancingFerret
Taken with the spirit 😂
There's nothing I've not read or been given to read. I have cut down at least ...

dreadisabaddog · 11/03/2024 17:55

Have you tried the dash diet? I thought my diet was very low salt but it's in everything, surprising stuff too. I'd recommend taking a look- it's helping me although it's still high

saturnspinkhoop · 11/03/2024 17:58

My bp is high. I’m nearly 40. My bmi is fine, I don’t smoke and don’t drink. I don’t exercise as such, but I do walk everywhere snd run round after my dc. My bp was always on the low side of normal, but over the last year it has gone high. No pills as yet. I think it’s stress related. Last year was the most stressful year of my entry life.

6amwakeupclub · 11/03/2024 18:03

I'm 51, never smoked, drink maybe once a month and been on Ramipril for a few weeks.
I'm not overweight, exercise regularly and eat a low fat, low processed diet.
Had whitecoat/higher BP in pregnancy and then it averaged 145 over 90 over a week.
Feel so much better on it.
I take it at night cos it makes me dizzy - anyone else peeing at 6 am.🙃

Sadless · 12/03/2024 10:22

I take mine in the morning but still up at 6 needing toilet . Apparently ramipril can cause water retention wonder if it’s that .

Sal

6amwakeupclub · 13/03/2024 18:47

I think I'm less bloated than pre-Ramipril.

Sadless · 14/03/2024 09:51

I have just been drs for ecg and bloods . They have put my ramipril up to 5mg a day she said the top number has come down but not the bottom as much .
does anyone know if ramipril affect the pill because I have started bleeding but I am on desogestrel and don’t usually have periods.

thank
Sal

bradpittsbathwater · 14/03/2024 10:11

Yes mine was brought on by preeclampsia at 35 which runs in my family too along with high bp, strokes and heart attacks. Mines not lifestyle related and I do need medication. I'm 40 this year. It doesn't really bother me on a day to day basis. I did lose a baby at 20 weeks in June due to severe very early preeclampsia which was brought on by my bp so that's been hard. I take meds and it's ok now. I'm sure a large proportion of the population have high bp bad don't know. Better to know and have it treated. A monitor from Amazon for under £20 saved my life in June.

bradpittsbathwater · 14/03/2024 10:13

I feel like there could be worse ailments in life. I'm not dying of cancer or anything like that and high bp is very treatable for most.
