Are you rhesus negative and had a pregnancy or loss? I have all of the above and have antibodies..

ALLthecheeses · 08/03/2024 13:34

Everyone has antibodies. Did she say what type of antibodies?

I found out with the pre op blood test for my d&c (surgical management of miscarriage) that I had anti s antibodies. I was also asked re transfusions which I'd never had. I don't understand how I got them and haven't bothered to look into it as I gather it's not an issue as long as the medical staff know in case of future blood transfusion. I was given a card to carry in my wallet stating my blood type and antibodies.

Genetics most likely.

Agree you need to find out what antibodies they are talking about.
I'm RhD positive and have some negative antibodies from either pregnancy or transfusion.
It's more rare to get if you're RhD positive but is possible.

I will ask the doctor on Monday when I go in for my appointment, she did say it was nothing to worry about but when they said abnormalities I was a bit shocked!! Thanks everyone for your reply’s x

bit unusual that they're doing a group and save for a lap chole - it's very rare to need it. Only thing it might make a difference to is how quickly appropriate blood could be provided in the vanishingly unlikely scenario of needing a transfusion (been regularly anaesthetising for lap choles for years and have never needed to transfuse anyone).

@Greybeardy when I had my lap chole they specifically told me they wanted to have full details of my blood in case of needing a transfusion. They took samples on two separate occasions just to be sure (that is what they said to me, which felt less reassuring than they probably meant it to be.) I have pretty ordinary blood so there was no talk of antibodies.

you have to have two samples to cross match blood so if they didn't have a historical sample from a previous admission then it'd be normal to take two separate samples pre-op if they thought blood would be necessary (if they had a historical sample & no transfusions since then then only 1 sample would be needed). Not everywhere does a G&S as a routine for lap choles as it's so rare to need to transfuse, however if there were particular risk factors that made bleeding more likely then that'd be different - if they did 2 samples rather than just one then perhaps they felt that bleeding was more likely. Am pretty sure that that's consistent with Royal College of Surgeons advice and not just a quirk of the Trusts I've worked at.

I remember getting a call like that years ago and scared me. Said I had antibodies but nothing else. I have since found out I’m o negative but also needed blood transfusions so it’s weird
