Unbearable sore throat and 10 day fever

delphi13 · 05/03/2024 21:07

Hi all, feeling very sorry for myself at the moment. I got a fever 10 days ago along with sore throat, white spots on my throat and the general aches and pains you get with a fever.

I left it for 4 days as despite the white spots on my throat it wasn't the worst thing I've had. Day 4 though, my throat got much more painful so I called the doctor. She prescribed me penicillin. She said it could be bacterial or viral but the antibiotics would cover it if it was bacterial. She warned I might get a tickly cough and diarrhoea if it was viral.

Well the penicillin did nothing and I did get a bit of a tickly cough and 2 days ago got some diarrhoea. Those aspects have cleared up but my razor blade throat remains. It's so, so sore. Feels like I've got an open wound in my throat. I'm taking ibuprofen and co codamol and it barely touches it. Sometimes I might get an hour or two of reduced pain (never totally goes) and then it's back. I also still have a fever. Not really high, just 38c but still, I'd have thought this would be getting better now.

I don't think there is much point seeing the doctor again as what else can they do. Any thoughts?

Is it strep throat?

Musicaltheatremum · 05/03/2024 21:13

Could be glandular fever. Sounds horrendous

delphi13 · 05/03/2024 21:15

I can only assume not as the penicillin didn't work and that's the treatment for strep throat. The white spots are also long gone. Just the fever, fatigue, and unbearable throat.

I guess it could be that, although I'm not aware of anyone around me having it and there has sadly been no kissing!

I once had laryngitis which was exactly like your symptoms - my throat has never been so painful. It took 2 weeks to finally clear. Antibiotics also did not work at all. My sympathies if it is that - I couldn’t even sleep because swallowing was painful.

Maybe it's this then. I haven't lost my voice at all, though it is sore to talk. Yes I can't sleep more than an hour at a time and I'm snoring like a wart hog as my throat is so swollen. Poor husband isn't able to sleep either.

I guess I can suck up another 4 days if this lasts 2 weeks. Just feel like a fever lasting this long is weird!

Have you tried Difflam spray?

Dd2 had a Cleft palate repair and was prescribed this to ease the pain its brilliant stuff though it tastes vile
You spray it into the back of your throat and it numbs it

Iv used it a few times and it's definitely my go to for stuff like this

Hope your feeling better soon

I have tried it but it is as effective as spraying water. Literally has no effect at all. Thanks though.

You can buy throat sprays in a pharmacy to numb the throat. They used to allow me to swallow small amounts of food and drink when had tonsillitis before I had them removed in my 20s.

Gargle with dispersible aspirin (then spit it out, don't swallow it as you're cleaning out any infected crap as well!) - that can help.

Prop up your mattress with old pillow, cushions, whatever underneath your head end - even 3-4inches will help with a better position for breathing. It's easier for balance and your comfort to do the whole width of the mattress rather than just under you, but it depends on your DH and his comfort too!

Set an alarm in the night to take pills if you're asleep. Make sure you're properly dosed up and not running down to nothing in your system as that's especially miserable.

Ask the pharmacist for Paramol - I find that much more effective than 8/500 or 15/500 co-codamol.

Thank you for the advice.

The throat sprays seem to do nothing unfortunately.

I've been gargling with salt water and effervescent Co-codamol but will give this a go.

I'm propped up by pillows but don't think I can get anything underneath the mattress without messing with DH sleep.

Ha ha, no need for alarms. I'm literally counting down the seconds until I can take more as they don't last very long. Starting to worry about how many I'm taking!

I'll give paramol a go. I found some old prescription painkillers from a dental infection that were very effective but only for an hour which was a shame!

Could it be quinsy ??
If so you need to be seen urgently

Sunnycats · 05/03/2024 22:55

I would go back to the gp. A fever hanging around could mean you have a bacterial infection and just because you can't see any white spots now doesn't mean you don't still have strep. The antibiotics may not have cleared it up. These things can turn nasty, please go back to the GP..

justasking111 · 05/03/2024 23:00

Did you see the GP in person @delphi13

I'll give them a ring tomorrow. Irritatingly our car failed its MOT yesterday and so I can't get to the gp in person now.

I did. So they did have a look at it.

No, not quinsy. My throat is swollen but not at all like quinsy levels. I've no breathing issues and, whilst very painful, I can still swallow food.
