just been on the phone to the Doctor who told me she's "definately not anaemic" and that her sugar, liver, etc.are all ok. However,he the proceeded to tell me that her platelets are slightly raised and wondered if she was asthmatic or anything. As far as I know, she isn't. He then said it could be associated with Allergies or even Worms.I was told just to keep an eye on her and as long as she seems better in herself then not to worry. Should I worry though? Should I request another blood-test further down the line or should I just leave things to settle?

OK, I don't know much about this, but couldn;t leave you bumping by yourself all night

I had raised platelets recently, and the doctor said it was prob due to a mild flare up of Crohn's disease (I was originally diagnosed about 7 years agg, so it was no great shock).

I assume it's an indication that there's some sort of inflammation going on.

BTW, my raised platelets were in combination with v v v low iron and folic acid (and possibly other raised inflammation markers?), plus pain, so it was clear that something was going on in my gut. (Don't want you worrying that your DD has bowel disease!!).

I honestly wouldn't be too worried about it (easier said than done, I know).

Hope someone who knows more than me comes along soon.

For peace of mind, I would get another blood test in a month or so.

I'm sure it'll be fine!

I'm, fairly confident that the NHS err very much on the side of caution and if further investigation were even remotely required, then it would be - however, can you get a second opinion? It's not embarrassing or unusual to ask for more information and reassurance.

Hello, I don't really post on here but lurk a bit. I'm a paediatrician (and a mum!)
I don't know why your daughter was having a blood test, or how old she is but I just wanted to say that we very commonly see slightly raised platelet counts in children and it is hardly ever something to worry about, if the child is otherwise well. They often rise in response to minor infections, like a cold or sore throat.
Platelets don't normally go up in asthma or worms, but a type of white blood cell called eosinophils can go up with these conditions, so I wonder if your GP was getting a bit confused. Either way, if it is just a mild abnormality on the blood test it is highly, highly unlikely to be of any significance, but I would discuss it further with your GP so that they can explain it a bit better.
Hope that helps

sunshine 74 thankyou so much for that.I'm sure it was that word he used...the one you used beginning with E...! so,the raised platelet thing is slightly different from the raised white blood thing? sorry, i couldn't take it all in on the phone.

just to let you know aswell Sunshine74...she is 9 almost 10. i originally took her to the doctor as she was having pain before urinating.however, urine sample came back clear.anyway, during a second visit as the pain seemed at the time to be getting worse i mentioned how people were forever commenting on how pale she is and that she was getting alot of headaches.he decided on the basis of what i told him that he would have some blood-tests done on her.he told me that this was seperate to the pains and that had probably been a viral thing.

Hi there,
yep, platelets are cells that help the blood to clot. They go up in response to all sorts of things, like infections, inflammation or a physical trauma - like an operation for example.
Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell (the ones that fight infection) and sometimes they get raised if there is an allergic type process going on in the body - asthma, eczema, that sort of thing.
If your daughter's symptoms are resolving, I wouldn't be too worried at all about the blood test - what is much more important is how she is in herself.
Hope you're feeling a bit less worried - it's awful when you google things and get more than you bargined for isn't it?
Hope your daughter is feeling loads better.
