Anal fissure not healing

Hi ladies so since I’ve given birth (a year ago) I’ve had a recurring issue with fissures so it’s very painful when going to the toilet and there can be blood. My GP has looked at it and saw a fissure there but is getting me properly tested to make sure it’s not anything else. has anyone had anal fissures that have taken ages to heal??

Sorry I’m no help. Following for the same reason.

Following as I'm having the same issue!

Your GP can prescribe various creams eg diltiazem as short term solutions.

But the ultimate cure is a Botox injection in the area. Ask your GP to put you on the waiting list asap.

What have you used already? I've had it a few times and rectogesic usually clears it up in a few days.

I've had an anal fissure for about fifteen years. Not even two rounds of Botox helped. I have to be really careful with my diet and drink loads of water. Lactulose helps.

Yes, still waiting for it to heal 20+ years later (sorry!). I had diltiazem cream which almost sorted it and there was nothing else available back then. Only had 1 months worth and couldn’t continue because I developed an allergy to the cream. It hardly ever bothers me anymore though but occasionally I get a twinge (eg if I get a bit constipated). Maybe I’ll look into Botox - how do you cope with a frozen bottom though? 😳

Hi all thank you for your replies. I’ve been given GNT I think that’s the ointment the one that gives you headaches and it hasn’t worked. The doctor is going to get me to see a specialist for it but also wants me to take a FIT test to make sure the bleeding isn’t from anything very serious. Which really worries me. She did say she has seen the fissure and the blood is always bright red when passing stops (sorry tmi) but it’s best to be safe. I’m wondering how common it is for anal fissures to not heal. I’ve had them on and off since giving birth. Had them for a few months they then went away but I’ve been struggling with them now again since November and it’s very sharp pain there when I go to the bathroom

OP I have developed fissures previously x 2 due to medication causing constipation. Both times it took around 6 months for complete resolution and I had adhere to a strict routine to get them healed.

  1. under no circumstances allow yourself to become constipated- all the healing is lost if you do and its back to square one. Ideally aim for soft stools-i used low dose lactulose daily OTC to achieve this.
  2. Strict hygiene- washing with gentle soap and water after BO.
  3. Applying anusol pessaries and cream twice a day and cream after BO.
  4. Try to avoid straining the lower abdo muscles if you can.
  5. Also as PP have mentioned GP should be able to give you additional creams to promote healing if required.

@jellycat bum doesn't feel frozen....nor does it look wrinkle free!

jellycat · 04/03/2024 16:27

@OutingPosts 🤣

Yes I did when I gave birth previously. I didn't do anything and it healed itself within 10 months. This time I've had one since last August, I've had surgery in December and it's still not healed completely but I'm not laid down in absolute agony for 2 days, being kept awake at night and needing to take meds/use a hot water bottle for the pain. It's improving. There's creams they can prescribe you to use before and after the toilet that stops the muscles contracting after and causing pain. I stopped using it though as it made me dizzy.

Alloveragain3 · 04/03/2024 16:34

If I have a good few weeks of no constipation, mine heal

However, just a day or two of very solid stool means it comes back. Grrr

VestPantsandSocks · 04/03/2024 16:36

Vaseline in the back passage to shield the fissure from further impact.

Paracetamol and hydrocortisone suppositories will also help along with the healing.

VanLife33 · 04/03/2024 16:48

Apply vaseline before and after going for a poo!

Taylormiffed · 04/03/2024 16:51

A decade here. Only ended when I had botox and an op to snip out the fissure and skin tag.

I have to be very careful about sitting down too long and eat healthily.

TheBirdintheCave · 04/03/2024 17:11

In two years mine never healed and then I had a 3b tear when giving birth to my son (likely exacerbated by the existing weak point of the fissure) and everything was repaired in surgery. It hasn't reopened since thank goodness. I'm (almost!) grateful my son came out at a funny angle 😂

Jayd291 · 04/03/2024 18:28

I had to get the surgery as nothing else worked, had no problems afterwards xx
