Why do I never wake up feeling refreshed?

Hi all

I'm wondering if anyone can relate. I go to bed at a reasonable time and sometimes get a good 8 hours of sleep. But I struggle to wake up in the morning, my eyes feel stingy and I'm shattered! I sleep like I am dead to the world also so I'm wondering what is going on?!

It's been like this for a while and I do have mental health conditions, I also have a b12 deficiency that I get treated.

I'm just curious on how i can actually wake up feeling refreshed and awake!?

I could have written this so interested to follow along. I have had lots of sinus infections since ds started nursery and I think I'm snoring so badly I'm interrupting my own sleep now!

Do you generally eat well and get fresh air and exercise during the day? Do you use screens etc before bed?

I have this very badly at the moment and have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease & underactive thyroid.

Have you had recent blood tests? Would be worth checking thyroid, vitamin D, iron levels

It’s probably still the B12. It took me ages to feel properly better even after the year of injections.

I am often in bed for 8 hours but the quality of my sleep is terrible, I wake up a lot and get very little deep sleep. I think that's why I never feel refreshed even though I take a sedating medication at night.

Sleep apnea?

AlltheFs · 03/03/2024 23:16

You probably have some sort of sleep quality issue that you aren’t aware of.

I have abnormal brainwaves at night- have had an inpatient sleep study done as it started to cause issues with my husband and all our sleep. I don’t feel rested ever because I have a parasomnia and my brain jolts through sleep phases in an abnormal way so I don’t get proper REM sleep (and sometimes do mad things). No treatment sadly.

Other people have sleep apnea or similar.

You need to work out how much sleep you need and how to set it up best for you. I need nearer 10 hours to feel well which I seldom achieve, that’s to make up for my sleep weirdnesses!

Do you dream a lot?

hk1993x · 03/03/2024 23:20

Wow so many experiences! Thanks for replying!

I have been on the b12 injections for around 5 years now so I don't think that is the issue. My hubby does say I do snore 😒 how lovely lol

I might discuss this with my mental health team.. I always tell them I sleep well, like I don't even think a meteor hitting earth would wake me up 🤣 luckily my hubby is a light sleeper.

Is there places you can go to get a sleep study etc done? I would be really curious as to what was going on with me. I am overweight, about a size 18 so that could potentially be a factor? Or maybe I'm just a big lazy sod 🤣🤣

Yes I do! Although I cant remember half of them and the ones that I can remember are the most silliest of things to even dream about 😒😅

I am also due to get bloods checked this week at some point too! I don't even drink caffeine anymore as it makes me more tired during the day, I think there is something wrong with my body 🤦‍♀️🤣

Have you tried magnesium before bedtime?

Have you tried magnesium before bedtime?

I havent! I've heard good things about that thought but I'm very careful with what I take incase it interacts with my antidepressants 🥹

It probably depends where you live but I was referred by GP for my sleep study which was at Papworth hospital. They have a special sleep unit.
It’s fecking weird being wired up with electrodes and having to have your sleep recorded and watched. I did not enjoy it but was very relieved to understand why I do the weird shit I do and why I almost never wake up feeling well. My brain has a party when I sleep.

Make sure you have a good routine before bed - i.e., for a start, not looking at screens posting on MumsNet! Haha.

Read, take a bath, listen to some relaxing music, try to avoid all screens.

Also, not everyone needs 8 hours. I, for example, find that 7.5 hours is my sweetspot, so that's what I aim for. You may find that, for you, 8 hours is actually oversleeping, which can cause lethargy just as much as not getting enough sleep.

Definitely no phones in the bedroom, invest in good blackout curtains. No caffeine after noon, no food/drink at all after 9pm (or earlier if you go to bed early).

hk1993x · 03/03/2024 23:39

Thanks all, I've downloaded a wee sleep cycle app and set an alarm for about 6.55am. Ive had a nice hot bath and now cosy in bed ready for snoozing!

I will let you know how I get on, thanks again for all replying! 💚

It may well be sleep apnoea. You should speak to your GP. Apart from the groggy feeling, other signs would be morning headaches and dry mouth when you wake up.
