Whooping cough but vaccinated ?

Adult DD has had awful cough for nearly 4 weeks now . GP diagnosed chest infection about 10 days ago and prescribed antibiotics. They seemed to help temporarily but are now finished, and cough has returned . She’s vomiting and has bad ear pain too. We will contacted GP again In morning. I’m now wondering if it’s the 100 day cough / whooping cough but she was vaccinated as a child . She’s now 23 . If it is whooping cough, could the vaccine have waned?

Whooping cough wears off for most completely by adults, only covers kids up til 4 I think when they’re at their most likely to be hospitalised with it. No adults have full immunity.

Hearing a lot of these types of coughs. All I can say is that a friend of mine only managed to get it under control with antibiotics and steroids. Don't really know about waning immunity. I would suggest going back to the GP. Hope she's better soon.

I've been vaccinated with MMR vaccine but still got Rubella when I was 18.

Vaccines do not always stop you contracting the illness

TheGoodOldOne · 03/03/2024 22:38

It must wear off I think because you’re offered it again in pregnancy… that would be my guess anyway.

Apparently the vaccine lasts 10 years. I was quite surprised. It doesn't seem very easy to get it privately either.

The vaccine does not give lifelong immunity. Whooping cough is a lot more serious in babies than in adults and preventing the disease in babies and young children is the important role of the vaccine.

There has been significant rise in the numbers contracting whooping cough in recent months. Numbers are particularly high in Wales.

Update , GP thinks it’s not whooping cough. Just a ‘chest infection’. But he didn’t say why… More antibiotics given - Doxycycline.

DS got whooping cough aged 14 - he had the vaccine as a baby and the booster at 12. He still got it (and tbh it was terrifying - the whoop was awful - I can't understand anyone who would risk this in a baby). His sisters who had the original vaccine but not the booster didn't get it and none of his classmates got it from him.

The "whoop" is really distinctive in whooping cough. If you don't hear it she may not have it.

hope she is better soon.

Vaccine immunity is usually good, but not 100%. It can often wane over time, and hence boosters may be suggested.

My DD1 had all of her MMR vaccines and boosters, including one booster just before going away to start uni. She still came home with mumps at the end of her first year, as did a number of her friends who had been on the same floor in her halls of residence.

I hope this course of antibiotics is successful for your DD and she is better soon.

She might just need a different antibiotic

Different ones suit different people for different conditions

Is she feeling ill or fluey?

She might have pneumonia if vomit has gone into her airway

We thought our daughter was vaccinated

we have since discovered that tens of thousands of kids were not given boosters infact maybe hundreds of thousands from 2019 onwards

I have suspected whooping cough, saw OOH dr who agreed it sounds like whooping cough and will treat it as such but no tests. It is really classic whoo...
