Is there any cure for snoring?

Yes I am posting this at 4am because I can't get back to sleep because of DH snoring.
He is on his side, not over weight and doesn't drink or smoke .
I'd usually wake him but we are not at home and he has a big drive in the morning.

What I wondered is do any gadgets I see on instagram etc actually work or are they all a waste of money?

As a snorer who has purchased all the gadgets I’m going to say ( for me) none have worked. We now sleep in separate rooms and have to book suites on holiday so there’s some sort of separate sleeping area for me.

it’s frustrating

EmilyGilmoreenergy · 03/03/2024 04:21

Oh goodness, it is frustrating yes.
I suspected they were all a bit snake oil, thankyou for confirming.

A sleep study is needed to determine the cause of the snoring. A CPAP machine is a very effective treatment for snoring. Both my DH and I snore and have sleep apnoea. We both have CPAP machines and it’s made a world of difference to the snoring. It’s virtually zero when using the CPAP, and a better quality of sleep.

@BananaBender Thankyou I will push for that.

I found that Mute nasal dilators really do work for me.

Has he ever had a broken nose? A deviated septum can cause snoring. What about sinus inflammation from hayfever etc? Antihistamines, anti inflammatory nasal sprays and sinus rinses can all help to reduce the inflammation and swelling and reduce snoring. My DH has a deviated septum and has chronically inflamed sinuses and they contribute to his snoring. He has to use a strong prescription nasal spray daily or else he’ll still snore despite the CPAP.

A GP should be able to refer him to an overnight sleep assessment and to offer tailored solutions. My husband is like yours - not overweight or unhealthy - and his is due to the shape of his jaw and he now has a custom jaw extender to open his airways and I haven't heard him snore since using it.

Perhaps a small cautionary tale from me. DH was horrendous. We were in separate rooms it was so bad. One evening we were on the couch and I was leaning on his chest cuddled up and I heard his heart having irregular rhythms.

I packed him off to the cardiologist and he had a full work up including a 24hr monitor and a coronary artery calcium scan. They noticed the irregular heartbeat was worse at night and asked did he snore. He said yes and they sent him off for a sleep study.

He was having 60+ apnea incidents an hour. That’s one a minute. He’s got a CPAP now and doesn’t snore and his arrhythmia has gone.

Snoring isn’t something to take lightly!

Murdering him would work 😉

MyFirstLittlePony · 03/03/2024 11:29

I wear earplugs

I slept in the spare room last night because of dhs snoring!
He’s worse when he’s been drinking which is a Friday and Saturday night but even the other nights he snores, sleeps on his side, I guess a little overweight but not especially notably.
It’s rare that I decamp but I wasn’t tired at all and was watching telly and he was snoring over the top of it, I had subtitles on so it wasn’t too loud though. Then he rolled over and asked if I could turn it down a bit more - 😵‍💫 so I just went to the spare room and watched telly in there in peace!

My DH's snoring used to drive me to despair.

He was referred to the sleep clinic and they said he didn't have sleep apnea but he was given a cpap for excessive snoring. It's a godsend. No more snoring.

Sorry for late response but thankyou to all your responses ( I won't be doing any murdering yet) , I have insisted on a GP appointment.
