Hello. My ds is due for his jabs tomorrow, and we were advised to get some calpol in as he'll probably get a temperature. Any suggestions on how I'm to give him a dose if he's only used to being bf and not had anything else in his mouth? I have a feeling that he'll just spit it out

Get a syringe from the pharmacy - you can gently squirt it in then. Hope all goes well with injections - ds hardly noticed and not ill with them at all.

littlepinkpixie · 25/03/2008 15:40

Do you have a syringe? If not you can get one from a pharmacy.

sonicdeathmonkey · 25/03/2008 15:40

Get a syringe from the chemists and let him suck that - they're a genius idea

geordieminx · 25/03/2008 15:40

get a syringe - 50p from chemist

RubySlippers · 25/03/2008 15:40

you don't - you get a syringe from the pharmacist and aim it into the pouch of their cheek

also, you may not need the calpol as not all babies get a temperature after their jabs

nailpolish · 25/03/2008 15:40

go to pharmacy and ask for a medicine syringe (tell them what its for) and squirt the calpol slowly and gently into the side of his cheek

he'll hardly notice and just swallow it fine

5 x posts all saying the same thing!

You can ask the chemist for a syringe for this, just put a tiny drop at a time in the baby's mouth. They normally don't spit it out because it's sweet.

sonicdeathmonkey · 25/03/2008 15:42

Lol, I think the general opinion is get a syringe

Sam100 · 25/03/2008 15:42

Ask the pharmacist for a medicine syringe - they will usually give you one. It is a little syringe (no sharp bits) with a stopper - you suck the medicine up into it then squirt into baby's mouth or let them suck out. It has markings on the side to tell you how much 2.5mls and 5mls usually.

I am the slowest typer!

macca08 · 25/03/2008 15:45

Thanks everyone for the quick replies Looks like I'll go for the syringe option then

If you have problems with the syringe (dd spat with deadly accuracy from very early on) you can put some medicines in milk. We put Ranitidine and Domperidone in EBM and, later, formula from about 9 weeks.

If other meds, do check with pharmacist is ok - but we've done it with two different antibiotics, Calpol, Medised etc with v good results!

Try an old fashioned chemist, and see if you can get a medicine dummy.

Well, he's having his jab today at 3:45. We have been advised from 2 friends who have young ones to give him a dose of calpol before his injection as this will help & they didn't have any probs. Would you agree?

WanderingTrolley · 26/03/2008 09:18

Phone the practice and get advice from the nurse, unless your friends are medical professionals.

Lots nurses etc do recommend Calpol before jabs, but that's not what it says on the bottle iirc.

RubySlippers · 26/03/2008 09:19

don't give calpol unless you have to and not before the injections as he may be fine

seeker · 26/03/2008 09:20

Please don't give such a tiny baby calpol unless the doctor say so - it's really not meant for people this age.

BellaBear · 26/03/2008 09:24

my HV said don't give it before as a)he may not need it and b) if he does he can only have two doses at this age and better not to 'waste' one beforehand
