Knee still very swollen 4 weeks after fall

This is my 80yo Dad. He fell down the stairs twisting his knee. It is the most swollen I have ever seen any limb, really enormous.

This was 4 weeks ago, he went to A&E who said no real harm done, rest and ibuprofen.

He's been resting because he still can't walk on it and it is still hugely swollen.

What does he do next? He's very reluctant to challenge the first medical opinion.

I've suggested he sees my osteopath, who treats my sports injuries (including soft tissue ones) but I'm not sure if that's really appropriate for a man of 80, although I couldn't say why.

Did they X-ray it at A&E? Might be worth seeking the opinion of his doctor, nurse practitioner, or a physiotherapist, I know physios are good with both bony injuries and soft-tissue injuries. Might be swollen due to bursitis, but someone properly trained will be best placed to judge.

At his age, he does need a proper diagnosis and support to prevent further injury, should he fall because of this one!

I've never seen an osteopath, I didn't know they did soft tissue injuries too! Yes then, maybe get a second opinion there.

Did they X-ray it?

I have had sprained ankles that were horrendously swollen for weeks and weeks. They did recover eventually.
