Anyone experienced this with their skin before?! Cancer? Fungal? Something else?

Hi! I noticed this on my chest in the last 2 weeks or so. I went to a dermatologist on the 1st of Feb and it wasn't there then so I know it appeared sometime between then and roughly 2 weeks ago. A doctor, nurse and pharmacist have diagnosed it as a fungal infection but after 3 days the treatment doesn't seem to be doing anything significant if at all! I'm worried about squamous cell carcinoma and skin cancer since it feels like it's got a slight depression upon touch. It doesn't seem to have grown in 2 weeks but has potentially gotten lighter. It's not itchy or sore but I have no idea what it could be...

For context last month I had another skin cancer scare for an atypical mole so I do have some knowledge of what to look out for. But this has me baffled...

Thank you from a very worried mama :(

I’ve had a fungal skin thing on my chest that looked a lot like this on occasion. It usually takes a week or two to go with the cream.

Mamachats · 01/03/2024 20:37

Thank you! That's helpful to hear. Did you have a single patch though?

Looks like it could be seborrheic keratosis. If it is you can get it removed privately. Obviously you need to see your GP.

nearlymrs · 01/03/2024 20:40

I had something like this that was fungal, also on my chest although more to the side of my breast- the cream they prescribed sorted it but I can't remember how long it took.

Yes. Only ever one patch. I’ve had it maybe 4 or 5 times (I’m in my early 50s now). Just appears for no reason, though once I know I was really run down. Very odd🤷‍♀️ Hope yours clears up soon too op.

I've looked into this too but the symptoms/presentation doesn't quite match in my opinion. Since being concerned about it last week I've seen a pharmacist, nurse and GP all of who have said fungal. But I just find it strange it's not itchy and in a single patch...

This makes sense. It came on overnight but after reading about SCC it seems like that can do and the way this is presenting also feels like that could be a possibly :( I'm not sleeping well and very worried about it! I just want it gone.

It’s a seborrheic wart, used to be called senile warts unfortunately! Totally harmless, not contagious, but you won’t get it removed on the NHS. I have one on my leg and one on the side of my face and they were diagnosed by a dermatologist.

I thought about this too - but it just appeared overnight! Because of my recent skin cancer scare I am on high alert and a couple of days ago I booked the next available dermo app in 2 weeks.

Also I just want to add - I know advice here isn't a replacement for the GP. 😊 But right now on a Friday night I just want to feel like I'm doing something to figure this out!!

Have you had your cholesterol levels checked recently? My dad had a similar looking mark on his eyelid that ended up being a fatty deposit which the Doctor said can be a common sign of high cholesterol levels. The Doctor checked and the levels were really high. This was less than a year after a previous check that came back normal, so may be worth looking into.

Oh interesting! I hadn't thought of that. Did your Dad's come up overnight? I'll have a look into it and ask the GP - thank you

Discoid eczema?

hothotheatbag · 01/03/2024 21:31

I get these if I wear a necklace with any nickel, could it be an allergic reaction?

I’m not 100% certain of time but it was pretty fast!

Ringworm?

I do wear a necklace but I would have thought it would have happened soon … I’ve been wearing the same necklace for over a year now and it’s around the same place as the pendant. Assumed it wouldn’t be this as I’ve worn the necklace for so long without any issues… but could be wrong?

Ringworm?

I’m not sure it’s fungal despite the diagnosis. It doesn’t seem to have the classic “ring” as you get in ringworm.

OP posts:
IsAWindingRoad · 01/03/2024 22:01

My kid don't have the ring either, just a round patch. Odd place to get it though. Get some Dakacourt. Cures anything.

SoEmbarrassed2024 · 01/03/2024 22:02

Another one that got something very similar looking as a fungal infection (and then managed to keep unknowingly reinfecting myself with a necklace)

Dermatologist took scrapings and recommended washing it in nizoral shampoo (cover the area, leave for a couple of minutes and rinse off) it was gone quite quickly

You absolutely can have them removed on the NHS as my friend has just done so. She had had it for a number of years without any bother, but then noticed it had started to grow bigger.
She saw her GP who referred her to the dermatology clinic , where it was removed and a biopsy taken and tested. She now has been given the all clear as it was a seborrheic wart.

OP, Yours does look very, very similar to my friends. But the best thing to do is go to your GP and set the ball rolling from there .
