Could this be a blood clot?

I have a cramp in my leg with no obvious cause. I’m on alert for blood clots because I recently had surgery and have risk factors, but I am also on blood thinners. Is it still possible/likely to develop a clot if I’m on blood thinners?

I have been moving around normally so not bed bound or anything like that.

I wouldn’t be concerned about cramp but if you have any throbbing, swelling, hot red areas then go to A&E.

throbbing pain in 1 leg (rarely both legs), usually in the calf or thigh, when walking or standing up. swelling in 1 leg (rarely both legs) warm skin around the painful area. red or darkened skin around the painful area – this may be harder to see on brown or black skin.

DVT (deep vein thrombosis)

Find out more about DVT (deep vein thrombosis), a blood clot in a vein, usually in the leg.

Thank you, that’s reassuring. Do you know how likely it is to develop a clot when already on blood thinners?

I don’t have any noticeable swelling or heat but I can’t shake the anxiety due to my multiple risk factors. I hate the injections but thought I’d at least be safe so this is has thrown me.

I am on blood thinners and have been told by docs it’s therefore unlikely I’d get a clot. But you should certainly check it out.

Hi @Dvtquestions I just came across your post. How is your leg feeling today?

I had a DVT ( my second) while on blood thinners. There were risk factors including a genetic condition that increases my risk of DVT. The only sign, for both my DVTs, was pain in my leg. I didn’t have any redness, swelling, or hot areas, either time.

I sincerely hope you don’t have a dvt, but agree with PP that you should get it checked if you still have the pain.

Dvtquestions · 02/03/2024 20:52

I’m sorry to hear that @Keepingongoing , I hope it’s all under control now.

There is still a really mild ache. I’ve been anxious about it all day but felt silly at the thought of going to A&E. Don’t know if I should just go to A&E tomorrow or contact the GP on Monday.

It’s the sort of thing I’d barely notice normally so don’t know if it’s health anxiety.

Thanks @Dvtquestions yes all under control now.

If there are risk factors as you say… in your situation, I’d still get it checked out as soon as possible . Have you used NHS 111 online? If not, I would do so and follow the advice given for next steps.

Dvtquestions · 03/03/2024 10:37

@Keepingongoing I didn’t know that 111 was online now so I’ve done that, thank you. It’s directed me to the out of hours GP and I’m currently waiting to be seen. Feel a bit foolish sitting here but better safe than sorry I suppose.

Definitely! Hope all is well.

Back home after spending most of the day at the hospital. Between the clinical assessment and negative blood work they were happy to send me home and I feel reassured. Everyone at the hospital was quite kind and took it seriously. They made me feel like I had done the right thing by coming in.

Thank you to everyone who responded here, it definitely helped guide me.
