Home blood pressure monitor/white coat syndrome

Thinking about getting a blood pressure monitor to use at home.
Recently had a hospital appointment and my blood pressure was high but I have dreadful white coat syndrome and get quite worked up. I was very worked up tbh! Doc wants me to do some readings at home when I’m not so anxious.

I can borrow a monitor from my GP or just buy my own which will be quicker. I’ve actually got a wrist BP monitor but not sure if this is good enough and don’t think docs are too keen on these. Readings on that have been fine though.
Price ranges are from £20+

Any recommendations?
Thank you.

My GP told me just to get one from Amazon. Recommended brands were A&D and Omron.

I've got This one

One from Lidl for me, had it years

I have an Omron M3 Comfort, is very good!

Wrist ones are pretty hit and miss in my experience. Omron are the ones used in my NHS trust.

Trick is to make it routine, like brushing your teeth, so it becomes normal and boring and you get to see the natural variation and underlying trend. Morning and evening, vaguely the same time but not a strict timetable, log it somewhere - DH keeps a paper list, mine go into Apple Health.

Omron are the best. Superdrug have the omron m2 reduced…

I bought a wrist one and had to return it, it was useless! I've got an Omron and it's brilliant. I have awful white coat syndrome, so have to do it twice!!!

Thanks everyone. I’ll check the recommendations out.

I have the exact same issue and I just bought one from Amazon. I tell them to not bother taking a reading in the surgery as it'll be through the roof.

At home, I still feel a bit anxious when taking it but usually take 2 or 3 readings (about 2 minutes apart) and on the 2nd or 3rd reading it's just about normal.

JoanChitty · 28/02/2024 12:38

I have terrible anxiety having my blood pressure checked in a medical setting. I bought an Omron as advised and they have an app that you can download your readings to your phone so over time you can see trends . My doctors are happy with these readings .

EcoChica1980 · 28/02/2024 13:49

I bought the popular choice on Amazon and it works fine.

One word of advice - after several weeks of becoming very alarmed at my BP readings at home a doctor eventually told me that, if you take two or three readings, it is typically the lowest that is the most accurate.

This is very good to know because I often saw v high readings first time, but the next one, or the one in five minutes time would be far less worrying.

PollyStressHead · 28/02/2024 13:52

Doc has decided he wants me to do a 24 hour blood pressure monitor thing now which he is arranging. I think I’ll still buy a home one though.

I recently had a vv minor op . Wasn’t even put to sleep. My BP was 166/89. I was completely freaked out. No one seemed concerned. Got my own BP monitor. Omron 3. . All my readings have been as low as 110/69 and as high as 133/84. My doc is not concerned . Told me it is within what is acceptable

VWT5 · 28/02/2024 20:00

I put the arm cuff on, and then relax and read for a couple of minutes before taking the actual reading.

Silverbirchtwo · 28/02/2024 20:10

I have white coat syndrome I have no idea why I'm not anxious about doctors or anything. My home BP results are OK a bit high average 130/80 ish, at the doctors off the scale. I wanted to do a 24 hr monitor that one of the nurses suggested but no deal. I worry how high it is if I go to the supermarket or any where stressful or I don't even know is stressful.

PollyStressHead · 28/02/2024 21:05

Chipstick10 that was the exact reading I had at my hospital appointment. That’s why he wants the 24 hour test.
I just think it will stress me out doing it and give higher readings.

That's the same as me and even at home I get so anxious so then it reads high which makes me more anxious so I have given up.

We've got an Omron one. The GP sent me an app to fill in morning and evening readings for a week. The app said to take several readings with a couple of minutes gap between each and submit it when they level out. I always try and sit in the same place with my arm in the same position and relax for a few minutes before starting.
