DS nearly 20 months was vomiting all day yesterday (hasn't even tasted an Easter egg yet )and his nappies were runny but not too bad. Today though he got worse. DH left me to have a lie-in as I'd been up in the night, thought DS needed breakfast gave him a bottle. I would have kept him on dry toast and water to begin with (gives me no pleasure being right though). A little while later up it came. A little while after that the explosive diarroah(sp?) started. By late this evening he was really hot too and lying on the sofa asleep most of the time. He's been talking so well but I've had hardly a word from him for two days now. At 8pm I phoned the out of hours GP service and got an appointment at the clinic. DS seemed a little better when we got there so I was shocked to be told his temperature was 40! The GP checked him over thoroughly and couldn't find an obvious cause so has said it is probably a virus but he was concerned as it is apparently unusual to get a temperature that high with gastroenteritis.

Anyway, my poor little DS is now on the bed alongside me. Still trying to get his temp down. Trouble is 5 mins after every dose of calpol we get another nappy explosion, plus random times in between so I am hoping he can stay asleep for as long as possible.

As much liquid as you can get him to drink, even if it is sugary juice from a bottle.

Also if you have any childrens nurofen, you can give that along side paracetamol (calpol).

I was once told to give my child 15mls of calpol by NHS direct as their temp was very high. I think their number is 08454647. Worth ringing just to speak to a doc.

Oh poor thing!

no milk
lots of cold drinks
banana -rice-stewed apples-dry toast for a couple of days. just a few mouthfulls when he feels like it is good enough.
Clear chicken soup with carrots to follow.

Did the Dr recommend rehydration powder (dioralyte)? If he poos and vomits frequently, would be good to give him some. Give with syringe if he won't take it (mine does not like it).
Even ice lollies. As long as he rehydrates, especially with high fever.
Strip him to nappy and loose Tshirt.

take care

I am sorry your little one is poorly, you must be very worn out. I get so worn out when DD who is 20 months is unwell, fretting, looking after her.

I agree with others - fluids more important than food. Rehydration liquid was recommended by m Dr, can buy it at pharmacy.

Ice lollies are great, so are ice cubes, DD likes to play with them so gets some liquid in at least, and also agree with syringe of liquid if he wont take it by himself.

Calpol every 4 hours, infant ibruprofen 6-8 hours (remember that ibruprofen should be taken with/after food, so he should eat something at least.

Luke warm (not cold) bath to ease the ache of fever.

Cuddles, and lots of fusses. Thats for you, that one!

Well his temperature is down to about 38 so I'm going to try to get some sleep too now. Just hoping I don't wake up in an evil smelling pool [yuk]. Thanks for the suggestions both of you . DS has had some dioralyte earlier. He seemed to quite like it. His one attempt to move off the sofa was to try to get his bottle which had contained it - not interested in the one with just water sensible thing. Sadly he then crumpled in a heap.

Milk was my MIL's tip . I was accused of being a cr*p mum because I ignore good advice. This was shortly before DS brought up said milk. According to MIL water on its own is no good, it's just water!

Think I will try to make some chicken soup, we have chicken left from roast. Sure DS would enjoy that after only dry bread and toast for two days. He also loves bananas and usually eats one a day .

Sorry took so long typing what with checking DS mid post that I missed yours Pavlov. Think half the problem is that believe it or not, this is the first proper tummy upset DS has had. He has been travel sick once, and brought up his milk a couple of times when he was very congested with a cold so we have been incredibly lucky. I thought I ought to know by now how to deal with this and the conflicting advice too. Bet you can't tell I'm an neurotic older first time mum

Poor you - and poor DS. My DS is 6.5 and had first bad tummy upset etc last week. His vomiting day was separate from his poo-ey day by almost a week though! And I wasn't too sure how to deal with it either!

Your MIL is sort of right - sorry! Water on it's own is not enough to rehydrate with something like this. It is 'just' water and the body needs to replaces the salts etc that it has lost. If your DS likes the Dioralyte that is great.

DD has only had one episode of full on sickness - not both ends luckily! She had also hit her head that morning, so when it came on all of a sudden and would not stop, I panicked and NHS direct advised A&E, as they would, much to the fury of DH, who hates hosp, not least on a friday night at midnight! Anyway, by the time we got their and was seen, DD was very annoyed, had stopped being sick, was being a bit cheeky to the nurse, who agreed it was nothing to do with smacking her head, just a bug!

I really did feel like a neurotic first time mother!!! DH thought so too, even tho nurse agreed better to be safe than sorry!!!

Glad DS's fever is reducing. Hope it continues, hope you get some sleep
