Whooping cough

I have suspected whooping cough, saw OOH dr who agreed it sounds like whooping cough and will treat it as such but no tests. It is really classic whooping noise when breathing in during a coughing fit.

I’ve been given antibiotics.

Anyone had this as an adult and how long will it last? I’ve heard it also referred to as 100 day cough, which I really hope isn’t true especially if I have antibiotics.

@itisafuckinggoat sorry to hear about your daughter, it really is a hideous journey.

With regards to "anti-vaxers", my 8 week old son caught WC from his 12yr old vaccinated cousin. Being vaccinated doesn't stop the spread, unfortunately, & their efficacy depletes over time.

I really hope your daughter has a speedy recovery 🤞🏽 x

I had my bought start the end of May this year, it most definitely lasted 3 months, and I still have a mild cough and a fluttery feeling in my lungs a bit.
I had every symptom of WC according to NICE guidance, though when I initially went to Drs it was only week1-2 and I hadn’t fully started with the whooping, so they just said viral, never mentioned WC. As it developed it was horrendous but I thought what was point going to Drs as if you’re an adult not pregnant or elderly and 2+ weeks into it, they just advise it’ll pass. They did prescribe a good decongestant when I was waking up gasping for air. It’s v unpleasant.

I know this thread is old. My DD (18) is just back from uni early, I am 100% sure she has whooping cough and we are now in the vomiting after coughing stage. She saw a uni doc just over a week ago who diagnosed a viral throat infection, she didn’t have a coughing fit while she was there typically. She’s really rough, bless her.

I take it this is circulating again because of the clever anti-vaxers? My brother was unable to have the vaccine when we were young, due to having a cold and mum not following up. He nearly died. Yeah, anti vaxers, what a win!

How long has she been unwell for so far? I had what appeared to be a mild cough and cold for a week before the nastiness kicked in at full strength for a few weeks, then 2 months of random coughing does with the whooping.

what made me certain I had it was that the cough was nothing like any cough I’d ever had before - it felt like my diaphragm was in spasm every time I had a coughing fit and I couldn’t stop the spasms. I also found that instead of the classic whooping noise, I was making all sorts of weird involuntary noises like a buffalo or something. It wasn’t like the coughing fits you have with flu or Covid. Really difficult to explain to someone who’s never had it but everyone who has had it will know exactly what I mean.

She’s week 2, heading into week 3. Ok between coughing fits, but her ribs and back are so painful now from coughing, and she is vomiting most times. Really horrible thing.

Was at my dr for the 4th time in 6 weeks yesterday and she thinks I have whooping cough. Been prescribed a 10 day course of clarithrymycin and a steroid inhaler.

I have been ill since first week of Nov when I had a viral cold which then went to my chest. Had 2 courses of antibiotics and one course of steroids, a clear chest cray and was told it was a bad chest infection which can take up to 9 weeks to resolve. The cough changed to a choking type cough maybe 3 weeks ago. I am exhausted and totally Fed up.
