Eye duct operation ... what to expect?

I am going into the hospital on Wednesday for an eye duct operation. I know this is a really routine op, that at least one MNer has had (and probably lots of MNers mums and dads?).

My op will be on Wednesday afternoon. I'm hoping to be out on Wednesday evening, but realise it might be Thursday morning.

It's under a GA. It's a short op.

If it goes well, should I expect to be walking around the ward on Wednesday evening and walking normally the next day?

When an I expect to be running and biking again?

(Oh, and for anyone who's had this op before - they will put a tube in and take it out two weeks later, apparently. How gross is this?)

Mum had this done on both sides - in and out the same day, and the worst bit for her was that the incisions meant that she couldn't wear her glasses for two weeks whilst they healed (they kind of drilled new ducts into her nose as her proper ones were too stuck together to open up).
Walking normally same day, just avoided cycling for a few days as the GA always makes her a bit wobbly for a few days, but you might be fine.

Oh, that's reassuring to hear.

I'm worried about the glasses thing, I am -6 or something. I do have contacts, but don't generally wear them ...

They did tell her in advance about the no glasses thing, so it might be that you are having it done in such a way that it'll be OK.

I'm the same sort of prescription as you and can't imagine trying to function without glasses - only have contacts for really active swimming etc.

Mum was OK, apart from reading, so borrowed loads of talking books from the library.

I'm wearing my glasses, just low on my nose.

My throat hurts more than my eye, damage from the breathing tube. But the op went well, I think, and I feel ok.

Glad to hear that it went well. I always get a sore throat from the anaesthetic tube too.

Are you noticing a difference with your tears ?

NotQuiteCockney · 27/03/2008 15:40

I'm not noticing a difference yet - but they've put a stent in, to hold the new duct open, so when they take that out, hopefully my eye will be better.

Probably drinking about a litre of cloudy apple juice right after the op wasn't wise, in terms of protecting my throat. (I know, it's my oesophagus not my trachea, but still ...)

Gah, I feel like shit now. Very tired, and my eye hurts. Nearly codeine time, I think.

And how the hell am I going to not blow my nose for 2 weeks?!?!
