My 4 year old has a terrible dry cough. & it's constant when I mean constant as in coughing one after another no rest CONSTANT!! She gets this regularly. I've taken her docs before & they have given her antihistamine. She's not poorly in herself but just constantly coughing, anyone know of any quick remedies to help?? Obviously doctors not open until Monday.

Have the antihistamines helped at all? As you can buy these over the counter if they helped.

Is it worse at night?

Nope! Been given them her regular it seems to work for around 20 mins then it starts again! Like now she has not stopped coughing for an hour straight & it's making her sick!

We have the same op but the doc suspects asthma. She has an inhaler now with a nebuliser that we give with a bad coughing fit. Hoping to get her formally tested soon but the wait is so long apparently. They say if it’s worse at night it can be a red flag for asthma and also if they have frequent infections /viruses, which I know most kids get but our little one has a new sickness weekly! She also can throw up with the cough and can’t seem to get a handle on it. It’s awful when that happens!

Like do you think she needs to seek medical advice I don't want to take her a&e if it's not needed? She has none stop coughing though 🤔

I was going to suggest asking for an asthma check.

Sunshineclouds11 · 24/02/2024 20:41

We got DS an inhaler when he was like this. Worked great.
I would ask GP

Luckyducky123 · 24/02/2024 20:41

Have you tried an air humidifier? I also used to put a spoonful of Vicks in a bowl of hot water and place under DD’s bed, used to help.

I was about to suggest piriton as we've been advised to take it. It has helped...although we'd also been prescribed antibiotics for a temperature.

Is she suffering with teeth coming through? They say nothing is linked but when my sons back ones are on the move he gets a cough and temp.

Hum if it's making her sick I'd be inclined to take her to A&E or if you have a walk in clinic near by.

DS 13 has asthma, but it's cough variant asthma and this is how it presents. I asked if the antihistamines helped at all as it can also be allergy related.

Coughing continously makes him sick and he has been kept in when he's been Coughing constantly. I think it's always wise to be extra careful with young children, they have never minded seeing DS when he's not well.

This sounds like an A/E job to me.
Is she using her abdominal and chest wall muscles ?
Does she have a tracheal tug ? (Google it )
Any sign of a wheeze ?
Can she talk comfortably in sentences ?

Better safe than sorry . Just take her in please .
