What do runners eat?

I started on the couch to 5k plan last Easter and have now worked up to 4-5 runs per week, of up to 7 mile.

I lost a few pounds in the early weeks, but nothing since, but that's OK because I didn't have much to lose, it was really to be fitter, which I have done. (would have been ridiculous to contemplate running 7 miles a year ago)

My problem now is that with all the extra exercise, I am sooo hungry all the time. I eat 3 reasonably sensible meals a day, but am still constantly hungry. I have never been a snacker before, but now find myself constantly sneaking bread and butter, cake, crisps etc. I'm not putting on weight as a result, thank goodness, but would prefer to refuel on something that might do me some good.

I need some (fairly) healthy snacks, that will fill me up and give me energy. What you other runners have? Please don't say fruit or carrot sticks I already eat lots, but never feel full up afterwards.

Yes, running makes you hungry! Carbs are important when you're running. I have a bowl of cereal. Peanut butter or honey on toast or a bagel. Or ryvita with various toppings. A handful of nuts or olives. A protein shake.

I eat rubbish too, by the way. In fact right now I am eating none of the above and lots of rubbish, and I need to get back on track.

I have never been able to exist on just 3 meals a day, by the way. Even before I ran. I have to snack. I found, when I was losing weight, that reducing the portion size of my main meals allowed me to have a couple of snacks a day and still lose weight. So, for your main meals, cut the rice, pasta, potatoes, meat etc by 1/3 to 1/2 and fill up your plate with extra veg or salad instead. Then you can snack away and it's okay!

unhealthy answer - as much chocolate as I like . healthy answer - porridge - I keep some at work and snack on it

Thank you for your ideas.

It's not so much about eating too much, as eating less badly.

Despite stuffing my face with all sorts of rubbish, I'm not putting on weight, I guess because of all the exercise. I was just trying to find some (delicious) alternatives to the junk.
