Fecal Impaction

Hi all,
I wonder if anyone has ever had fecal impaction of the small intestine? I have had this feeling of tenderness and a blockage behind my belly button area for three weeks now, along with constipation.
yeaterday I had a colonic (my first ever) but apparently that only clears your large intestine, and I have tried movicol and lactulose but ended up feeling very thirsty and I was just doing very thin stool, stuff I think was passing around the blockage.
I would be so grateful for any advice / support. Is there anything that would address the small intestine rather than the large? Castor oil? A specific laxative? At this point it’s really affecting my mental health and I’d be willing to try :)
thanks in advance

Drink loads of water but watch electrolyte levels - perhaps take some of those drinks with electrolytes (which normally you take when you have extreme diarrhoea) but drink - not sugary of with caffeine.

Chia seeds (google internal shower!)
Two kiwi fruit daily with the skin on.

I urge you to see your GP. Faecal impaction can be dangerous and as you've tried the usual remedies without much success, it would be good practice to seek medical advice.

I've had a fecal impaction this month. What dose of the movicol/laxido did you use because the disimpaction dose is much larger than the maintenance dose. My GP advised 6 sachets a day for a week, it was hell on earth but the amount of stool that passed was unbelievable. I'm now currently in the process of reducing the dose and trying to find what maintenance dose works for me to prevent this happening again, it's not easy, I've asked my GP again for further advice but they just said it's down to me to work out what dose is best now based on symptoms. It's hard going and I'm still struggling. I would advise speaking to your GP.

Are you guessing that’s the issue? If so you do need this to be confirmed by a clinician as you may need tests to find out for sure/ see what the cause is.

What @Nogodsnomasters said - I had impaction (much lower down) and it was something like 8 sachets for impaction of Laxido. But it says in the instructions.

But I would see a doctor if you think that's what it is, and I wouldn't be treating it on the assumption that's what it is... it can be really dangerous (I ended up in hospital for treatment, although I was only days post abdominal surgery too).

Are you just guessing that this is what you have? I’d go and see your gp for an examination, as lots of things might cause your symptoms. Over flow diarrhoea, when something is passing a blockage in the bowel, is usually liquid, not any sort of formed stool.

I was passing flat stools and ribbon stools that were formed past my backlog for at least a few weeks before it got to the stage of becoming overflow diarrhea. So it may be building up the backlog of stool.

Impaction in the small intestine is unusual and needs medical attention. You don't know what could be going on.

Enigma52 · 23/02/2024 11:04

Unless you are a medic, I would suggest seeing a GP quickly. As others have said, this could be anything.

Hope you find some relief soon OP.

Thank you everyone. I have been to the doctor - they were the ones who gave me the prescription. I am also seeing a chiropractor and they have referred me for an MRI because of spine pain, constipation, and reduced response to the knee reflex test. So the MRI will hopefully show up any impaction.
i feel more comfortable since the colonic yesterday, but still feels like there could be something impacted in my small intestine (behind my belly button). I will of course go to A&e if I’m concerned about any change to my symptoms.
thank you for your guidance - if anyone has moved fecal impaction in the small intestines by using stool softeners (like movicol) please do let me know as that would motivate me to give them another go. But wondering if it will only act on large intestine.
