Have had IBS D for 20+ years. Have read a recent study about the benefits of amitriptyline for IBS D.
Have been prescribed 10mg daily. Anyone had any experience with it?

First time around was as a muscle relaxer for bad back - it was great got me to sleep when in pain etc, really helped. Sent home from hospital on it as long term.

Had a break and second time of taking it for a fibroid issue, it just isn’t working as I found it to be before.
I’m only perservering as I know it’ll get served up whilst in hospital but after I’ll be seeing my GP to hopefully have it stopped.

I have similar IBS symptoms and am very triggered by anxiety. I was on Amitriptyline for pain for a very short time but didn’t notice any difference in my IBS. However, when I went on Sertaline for anxiety when my mum was unwell, I noticed massive improvements. It gave me stomach cramps occasionally for the first few weeks but after that settled there was a real difference as I wasn’t nearly so anxious.

Interesting about the sertraline. I might ask to try if amitriptyline doesn’t help

My child is taking this after extensive tests for debilitating ibs symptoms that developed suddenly. The conclusion after all tests were negative was a problem with the nervous system - gut brain axis dysregulation.tried every other possible ibs medication with no relief. Started on 10mg amitriptyline with immediate relief building up to 30mg. Not cured but in comparison to before she has her life back. So depends on the root cause of your ibs…

Hi there. This thread came up as my 18 year old son is having awful issues with IBS. He’s had all the tests but there is no clear cause. I have bought some books and will start my research re elimination diets etc. Can you explain what you mean by the gut/brain thing? He has started to get incredibly stressed before having to leave the house which doesn’t help matters. His issue is not at all ‘in his head’ , but getting stressed doesn’t help matters. Thank you. I hope your daughter is doing ok. X

Hi, I was told that when there is no physical cause so all tests clear like scans/camera/bloods/stool,test/ elimination. it is caused by an issue with the gut brain axis. We have a second brain in our gut that send signals to our brain ye two communicate with each other . My daughter had extreme stomach pain and ibs symptoms we tried lots of medications for ibs nothing helped. She had experienced anxiety her nervous system was showing she was in fight or flight so the nerves in her gut were over sensitive so they send abnormal signals to the brain causing all,the physical problems .so for example she would drink apple juice and her stomach would interpret it as acid and send pain signal to her brain so she was in agony She also tested positive for Sibo which is bad bacteria which can cause ibs symptoms. Even after antibiotics s for that the problems still continued. She was prescribed amitriptyline to dampen down the nerves in her stomach which were causing the pain and ibs symptoms. She still, struggles but she isn’t as bad as she was which was bad and very distressed. She also has to watch certain foods. Also worth trying probiotics but make sure science backed ones. Hope that helps.

I had it prescribed for an undiagnosed chronic stomach complaint. Took 25mg and it didn't help my stomach but did help my insomnia.

I came off it though because the dry mouth and drowsiness the next day were too much.
