What is this pain?!

Started 4pm yesterday with what I assumed was my first ever bout of heartburn. I’ve been burping a lot and have pain under my upper right ribs.

It’s been 26 hours now, it’s a stabbing pain. Indigestion remedies haven’t worked. It’s hurting for deep breaths and movement to the point I’m really very uncomfortable but don’t feel it’s an A&E level or pain.

I’m going to contact the GP tomorrow but just wondering if anyone has any ideas of what it could be?

Phone 111, or go to a and e. Don't delay.

Based on what? I’m not in severe pain, but it’s very uncomfortable

Possibly a gallstone trying to pass through - so painful I thought I was having a heart attack. Please seek medical help just in case. Good luck

Thank you. I did wonder if this was it, but NHS says it lasts 1-5h, this has been much longer

I had that for about 24 hours before my appendix was about to burst. I got admitted and operated on within hours of being seen by my GP.

Are you pregnant? Could be a number of things, if it's stabbing and pain when you breath you need medical advice, what can the gp do except listen to your chest and maybe do an ecg.

endofthelinefinally · 20/02/2024 18:12

It sounds like typical gall bladder pain. Is it worse after eating? The fact that it is persistant does sound as if it is a gallstone thst has got stuck. It is unlikely that A&E would do anything other than tell you to see GP. Unless you were in such severe pain you need strong painkillers.
You could try 111. They might be able to get you a gp appointment.
Check your temperature as a fever would need prompt medical advice.

Feels like you're being stabbed in the back?

It's stress I think

But ibuprofen does relieve it a bit

coxesorangepippin · 20/02/2024 18:16

. It’s hurting for deep breaths

^

Like it's too painful to take a full, deep breath?

I had this the other day, as per above I think it's stress.

I suspect it may be a medical cause

Do you mean under your rib cage, right upper abdomen? Or right upper ribs just below your collar bone? Front or back? I just read your op again and it isn't clear.

Doteycat · 20/02/2024 18:20

What colour is your pee or BM? Changes in that can indicate gall bladder also.
If your pee is dark and your poo is pale, u need a and e.

RockAndRollerskate · 20/02/2024 18:22

@endofthelinefinally under my right ribs, apologies I wasn’t clear. About 4ish cms down from my right boob.

I’m not pregnant and not stressed.

thanks all will give the GP a call tomorrow

That is where your gall bladder is situated.

endofthelinefinally · 20/02/2024 18:26

Don't eat fatty foods and avoid alcohol. I expect you don't feel like eating, but those two things will definitely make it worse.

BoyMom24 · 20/02/2024 21:08

Typical gallbladder pain. I have gallstones and is exactly as you describe. Unless it's severe pain, and I mean can't move severe pain or you have obvious signs of infection, perforations etc A & E won't do much. Pain relief and home I imagine. If it is that if course.

BoyMom24 · 20/02/2024 21:10

Also, go and get some buscopan. If it's gallbladder related it will bring some relief. I went to A and E with my first ever gallbladder attack once and they gave me IV buscopan and it really helped. Something in it calms the spasms.

holjam · 20/02/2024 21:15

This sounds like gallstones, I am a long time sufferer and get pain like this when having an attack.
As pain is persistent and lingering you need to get medical help as soon as possible.

I'm also a lot of time sufferer, diagnosed almost two years ago it does deffo sound gallbladder related doesn't it.

endofthelinefinally · 21/02/2024 01:51

Buscopan is an antispasmodic and is helpful, but I think best prescribed by GP after confirming diagnosis. OP, if you can't get an appointment, can you do an e consult? Your symptoms are classic and should warrant a call back at least.

RockAndRollerskate · 21/02/2024 11:59

Thanks all. GP appt confirmed today that it’s most likely a gallstone - blood test next week and ultrasound in 4-6.

She only suggested to avoid fatty food and alcohol and take Paracetamol!

Yes unfortunately unless you have a raging infection or inflammation they won't do much. I've had one since August 2022. Luckily I only get occasional flare ups nowadays. Buscopan and ibruprofen are your friends at the moment!

coxesorangepippin · 23/02/2024 01:33

How are you feeling op? Is the pain still there??
