DS just cut first tooth - waking screaming, is that normal?

Hello!
My DS is 6 months old today and we noticed his first tooth broke through today (Explains why he's been off his bottle and his sleep has been shot!).

Tonight, when we put him to bed at 7pm he was fine. He woke at about 9pm screaming hysterically in the way I think I recognise as pain. We couldn't settle him at all, he just screamed and screamed (lot's of high pitched too). Is this likely to be because of his tooth that's just come through? I thought that it was supposed to be more painful before it cut?

Anyway after a lot of cuddles and a chew on a teething ring, Calpol and some teething powder, he finally settled again.

I just wanted to find out if others have had there LO screaming in the night after thier tooth had just come through?

Thanks for any replies!

Yes very normal. With ds1 we would pace around the room trying to soothe him. With ds2 we bunged some calpol in a bottle as he was mix fed at that age, and just gave him that.
We cuddled them till the calpol kicked in and then they would settle.
Usually found they get a bit cranky for a week or so then terrible for 2 or three nights while the tooth is actually cutting through the gum.

yes it's normal and he's probably got another one on the way right next to it.

both of my DCs get earache when they are cutting teeth, and have occasionally screamed in pain when it's all been happening and the tooth has broken through. DD bit hard on a teething ring and her gum was bleeding, then the tooth was there, so I thing the point of braking through must be quite sore. I think if it's their first experience of pain as such, it can be quite distressing for them.

I use a combination of homeopathic teething granules, calgel/bonjela and calpol.

usually my DD gets bright rosy cheeks when she is teething and pulls at her ears a lot. We watch out for these symptoms now and give some pre-emptive calpol before bed if necessary.
