I might just rip my tonsils out

Help! I've just had strep throat. I suffered through it for 10 days as the GP said it could get better on its own. Eventually I couldn't cope with the pain and sleepless nights anymore and got antibiotics. Within 24 hours, my throat deflated and it felt amazing!

I had a 10 day course and a couple of days before finishing it I got a tickly throat/cough. I thought I just caught a random virus from the DC who both have a cough and are full of green snot.

But now two days after the end of the antibiotics its been getting consistently worse and I am back to unbearable pain levels again. To make things worse I am starting a new job tomorrow. I honestly could cry.

Please reassure me that it's likely just a virus that will self resolve soon and not strep again? I can't do this anymore 😥

I also have a headache and body aches, and the pain is radiating to my ears.

As you've had antibiotics already 111 probably shouldn't have referred you to the pharmacy (I'm a 111 health advisor). Under the pharmacy first scheme, the pharmacist is supposed to have a consultation with the patient. They should have looked in your throat! I would complain to 111 once you're feeling better.

Oh op so sorry to hear that, you've had an awful night. Did you manage any sleep whatsoever?

Abergale · 22/02/2024 07:24

Op it’s not like you’ve just taken time of with a “normal” sore throat. You’re in hospital. I don’t want to say I’m sure it’ll be fine cause some companies are awful but most managers wouldn’t want you attempting to work whilst in hospital.

SoreThroatHell · 22/02/2024 11:02

Work has been supportive, phew! Drip has worked its magic and I'm pretty much pain free. I managed to sleep twice 1 hour... the night before the pain had kept me up most of the night so some serious sleep deprivation going on here!

@Computercalendar yes that's what I had understood from 111, that I would have an actual consultation. That's why I was so disappointed when they didn't and just suggested gurgling salt water. It really sent me over the edge!

Bloody Nora that sounds scary.

I've got quinsy at the minute too although managed to get antibiotics whilst I could still swallow. My GP was great. Phoned at 3ish and by 4pm I was at pharmacy having seen Dr.

He was amazed though at how i was managing pain with paracetamol.

On Tuesday night I was scared though as was still swelling up more. I think if i hadn't got the antibiotics when I did I would have ended up at A&E.

Take care and look after yourself.

Nogodsnomasters · 22/02/2024 12:26

So glad to hear the pain is being relieved for you! You will sleep like a brick when this is over.

SoreThroatHell · 22/02/2024 16:33

I'm planning to go to bed at the same time as DC at 8, I'm looking forward to it sooo much!

@SurelynotCovidagain sorry you're going through this, but good that your GP was on it. Its scary isn't it, not knowing if it will swell up more. That's why I was determined yesterday not to leave until it was sorted, despite how uncomfortable the wait was.

Have you been discharged now op? Hope you're home, experiencing some relief and coziness.

Luckydog7 · 22/02/2024 16:52

I had something similar op and got tested for Quincy. Stabbed in the tonsils with a big needle. Was in such discomfort that the stabbing was a relief! Eventually diagnosed with peri-tonsilitus. the main difference in symptoms is locked/stiff jaw. Mine was so painful to open that I struggled to get my toothbrush in and didn't eat for 3-5 days each time. It took four rounds of infection and antibiotics (partially my fault as the offered to investigate but it was Christmas) before deciding on having them out in June last year. Recovery is awful but no infection since.

Charlie2121 · 22/02/2024 17:07

I’m not sure how old you are however a little word of warning to be careful about having your tonsils out if that is ever suggested.

I had mine removed at 40 and it was quite honestly the most awful experience of my entire life. It is nothing like having them removed as a child. In fact some countries they won’t even remove them as adults due to the trauma it causes.

SoreThroatHell · 22/02/2024 21:31

Yes I was discharged at lunchtime, with 95 pills to take at home now. Funny enough, I'm struggling to switch off and sleep, too much adrenaline!

That's interesting @Luckydog7 as I did have stiff/locked jaw. I still do now even though all swelling has gone down, but it has eased. The doctors seemed confused by it.

@Charlie2121 thanks for sharing as the doctor briefly mentioned this option this morning but I can't imagine it would be pleasant and I wouldn't opt for that after just one episode I don't think. I'm also nearing 40 and imagine it would be horrendous! I had lots of tonsillitis as a child, it was always my weak spot. I kind of wish I had it done then so I wouldn't even remember it!
