Is it reasonable to take more time off work?

So I've been ill for the past couple of weeks. Have actually only had 2 days off sick, worked for 2 and then the rest was on annual leave anyway. But I've been SO ill I've basically been in bed almost the whole time I've been off. Finally got seem by a doctor last Friday who said I had a lung infection, prescribed antibiotics and steroids and told me if I got any worse I needed to head to A and E. I do feel quite a bit better now, 2 days later. But I still haven't been able to do much. Managed to take the kids to the park yesterday and sat on a bench while they played but other than GP it's the only time I've left the house in ages. Would it be unreasonable to take tomorrow off sick do you think? Even though I'm feeling a lot better? And to say that if I do work later in the week it will have to be from home so I don't have to handle the commute?
I work for a charity so I really worry about things like this because I know my salary is basically paid for by people's donations, and our cause is very important to me. I don't want to take the piss. But then I think to myself, it's a lung infection. I think that might even be another name for pneumonia, I've been SO ill. It's reasonable. But on the other hand I'm not so ill now. I am still very breathless though.
Thoughts please

If you aren’t well enough to work or to commute to work then it’s reasonable to ask for an adjustment so you can work or to have the time off.

BookWorm45 · 18/02/2024 14:47

You sound to have been quite unwell. I would think it's completely reasonable to have time off work tomorrow. You need to be well enough to cope with a day's work and maybe you aren't quite there yet.

If I was your manager, and you told me how ill you'd been and that you were still breathless, I'd ask you why you were at work and whether you should be off sick.

As for the commute v wfh - if you can do your job from home, then you should definitely avoid the commute this week.

Scarletttulips · 18/02/2024 14:51

I think we all need to accept it’s ok to be ill.

If you’ve only managed to be out sitting in the park - then you need some much needed rest.

Message now and get it out the way.

See I probably could do some very basic work from home tomorrow. But I'm too breathless for meetings / phone calls etc and I'm concerned that I might make mistakes on anything I do because I'm not really "with it".
I think the reason I'm worrying about it is because I'm starting to feel better. If I'd have been working last week I'd have HAD to take the time off and had no qualms about doing that because I couldn't even get out of bed. But luckily I already had the time booked off as it's half term. But in the end my DH had to take leave as well to look after the kids because I was too ill.

If you're not well enough to do your usual duties (whether at an office or from home) then you should take more sick leave. Also worth discussing phased return (reduced hours/WFH with no commute).

What did the doctor recommend?

turkeymuffin · 18/02/2024 16:06

You're sick. You have pneumonia. You need to rest and recover.

You also shouldn't use annual leave when you're sick.

How long do you have GP note for? I'd be getting one for the whole of next week if I were you.

Honestly there are no prizes for working yourself to death.

Samsond · 18/02/2024 16:11

The annual leave was already booked. It wasn't that I decided to take the time as AL rather than call in sick. Just bad luck (for me) timing wise.
I haven't got a fit note from the doctor, although Im sure they'd give me one if I asked. They told me as long as I'd completed at least 2 days of antibiotics I wouldn't be contagious so fine to go back whenever I feel well enough.

A mum I know was like this ill for a bit on and off then got worse and feeling very breathless - called 111, admitted to a&E straightaway and has now been in hospital for the last 10 days. They also have pneumonia - it's very serious, you need to rest - and that is completely, in bed doing nothing - probably for at least a week maybe more.

If you're breathing gets worse call 111.

Henowner · 18/02/2024 16:18

You need to rest until you're fully recovered 💐

Singleandproud · 18/02/2024 16:22

If you were sick over annual leave you can have that time back and be put down as sick leave instead - at least you can with my employer I assume it's a national thing. It's generally better to have one block of sickness instead of going in and out.

You don't sound like you are better, antibiotics always improve things initially but it doesn't sound like the sort of thing that disappears over night

Imnotaslimjim · 19/02/2024 20:50

Pneumonia takes a long time to recover from, easily a couple of months. Even 9nce the initial lung infection is dealt with you still have crushing fatigue to deal with. Personally I would get in touch with work, explain that you've been ill all over your AL and you need a little more time to recover. You'll find you have fatigue and brain fog for a while. Get well soon

JoyousPinkPeer · 29/04/2024 08:55

You need to be off work if you are ill, which you ckearly are. Most people would have phoned in sick whilst they were on holiday, which is what you should have done.
