i cant have any contraception with oestrogen in as my mum had a deep vein thrombosis, i also have migraines and therefore the doctor wont let me have it.

ive tried the injection but i bled all the time. im on the mini pill at the moment and it seems to be ok (only had it for 4 weeks though) but i want to have something a bit more permanent.

the nurse said i should consider having a copper coil fitted. it sems a good idea but i dont know anyone who has had one without hormones and wondered if anyone here has any negative or positive experiences they could share with me.

im just worried that i will have it fitted and constantly bleed.

thank you in advance

I bled like a stuck pig for 3 weeks out of 4 when I had the coppper coil. I have know people who found it a good form of contraception.

Why can't you have the marena coil? there are no oestrogen in it, just progesterone, and you will tend to be bleed free

heavy bleeding for the first 2 periods.
that is all.
had it for 8 years.

i have and it is fine - didn't want hormones so chose this.

no change in periods and suits me well. It really varies a lot from person to person. If you do a search on threads here you will see some love it some hate it.

Was absolute hell.

I suffered for 15 months, as i kep thinking it would get better, but it was awful.

Hurt a bit when they out it in, and when they took it out.

Every month I had awful pains down my legs, beld heavily, and for more than a week.

hoxtonchick · 23/03/2008 19:37

i like it, it's kind of no brainer contraception. but i do have heavier periods than i did before i had it (after 2nd baby).

mumandlovingit · 23/03/2008 19:37

i was told that the mirena coil would have the same effect as the injection and i bled badly all the time with that

i just dont know whether to bite the bullet and have it done as im due a smear test soon and could have all the tests done at the same time.

i just dont know how comfortable i am with the feeling the threads bit that the nurse said i have to do to check its still in place.

Fantastic for me. Heavier periods admittedly but apart from that excellent. Would highly recommend it. (But I do think it varies greatly from person to person.)

thank you for your responses.i will maybe see how i get on with the mini pill for another month or so and then speak to the nurse again beofre i have my smear test about it all.

I had one for just over a year and have just had it removed. I too couldn't have a mirena so was persuaded by family planning nurse to try a copper coil instead of being sterilised which was what I had asked for. I stuck it for a year as they kept saying it would settle down. I bled with varying degrees of heaviness all the time. At one point my dh asked if it worked by rendering me completely incapable of having sex ever again!!!I have been sterilised now but 6 weeks post removal I'm still waiting for my cycle to settle. I had no problems at all before I had the coil but had run out of options for contraception hence why I tried it.
