Measles scare

Can someone please reassure me?

My 15month old DD was yet to have her 1 year vaccinations. We’d had them booked but had to reschedule due to illness and antibiotics. Unfortunately had to wait a month for next appointment.

I was ok with this.

Fast forward to today when I get a message from my DS’s class mums group chat. One of the mums is 99% sure her son has measles and are waiting for a test kit from public health. Now on Tuesday said child was at a party with my DS, I was there also with DD. So after receiving that text, I went into a state of panic! Called the drs and they said to bring in her at 4.30 today and they can get jabs done, as if it’s within 72 hours of exposure they should still get some immunity.

It honestly hasn’t made me feel any better about the situation. I’m still riddled with anxiety that’s she going to get it and be super super poorly and my brain cannot cope? She’s going to be irritable and poorly from the jabs anyway but I know any little thing I’m gonna assume it’s measles and she’s getting seriously ill. Anyone ever been in this situation? Can anyone give me some advice?

losing my bloody marbles through worry.

thanks x

Of course I’ll cope I know, we always do.

Dd had viral meningitis at a week old and since then I’ve suffered with health anxiety. I sought help from the get go and have been doing ok for the last 8 months.
Now it’s back in full swing and I’m trying to use my coping techniques but no luck so far!

I appreciate your speedy response and I’m so glad your daughter was ok by the end of it. If it is measles hopefully we will have the same outcome.

Did your dd have any direct contact with this child? If not I would try not to worry. There are also measures that you can take to try to reduce the likelihood of complications from measles. If you look back through the archives of Mumsnet they are there. They are a bit difficult to find online because (understandably) nobody wants to promote vaccine hesitancy in favour of just coping with measles.

It's such a shame that vaccine hesitation has caused measles outbreaks. The measles vaccine is so effective, too. I hope your dd will be ok Flowers

No, not directly. Just in the same large room. DS didn’t spend much time near said child either. I’m just praying that we’ve managed to avoid. I will look into complication reductions. Maybe not now though as I will spiral down another hole of panic I’m sure. Thank you for post ☺️

I also have health anxiety so I know just how you feel.

However you have done your best and worrying won't change the outcome now.

Fwiw I had measles before I was one and apparently I had a day or two of fever and being unwell but was otherwise ok. It isn't always extremely dangerous. I'm sure you know that but it's worth repeating.

So reassuring. Appreciate your message more than you know ☺️

It sounds like the Health Protection Team and your DDs GP are both on the ball and following the health guidance to an absolute T. Hopefully your DD still has some of your antibodies from birth and the early MMR will help boost her immune system so she does not become unwell from possible exposure to that virus. A child with just one MMR dose is far less likely to develop complications from measles if they are unlucky enough to catch it.

Hope all goes well for your DD and this will become one of those slightly scary parent moments when you look back.
