Higher blood pressure in the evening

KatyMac · 16/02/2024 08:14

The gp has asked me to buy a blood pressure mo it or and take my bloods morning and evening

5 days in my morning is 124/65 and my evening is 161/75

Previously my bp has been very low 90/60 ish - the change happened around the time I had covid

Can anyone explain why the difference please?

Are you stressed at work? Maybe your blood pressure rises through the day because of that.

justasking111 · 16/02/2024 08:22

BP rises when I eat drink. Also I'm a weirdo whose blood pressure is higher when sitting down. My GP takes mine standing up now.

KatyMac · 16/02/2024 08:25

Mine drops when I stand up and I "need to take special care when getting out of bed and standing in case I fall" I'm 55 ffs

Oh and I am falling over but not when I stand up generally I'm well into activity when it happens!

I'm a part-time designer/dressmaker I'm pretty chilled about that

Has anyone else experienced this?

Are you keeping well hydrated? Taking three readings?

KatyMac · 16/02/2024 11:31

I'm pretty well hydrated I have a bladder repair so I'm careful

3 readings? Each time?

Bugger no! Does that mean I have to start my week again?

Didn't they tell you about the three readings?

user1471505356 · 16/02/2024 12:34

Take the best of 3 reading over 15 minutes.

KatyMac · 16/02/2024 13:09

Nope - just go a buy a monitor and take morning and evening for 7 days

The bp dropping when I stand up hasnt been replicated at home

Blood pressure does rise over the day and then starts to fall again. Why don't you ask your GP for a 24 hour monitor.

justasking111 · 16/02/2024 13:43

At GP asthma nurse said my BP was too high according to the notes. Machine took it again 80 60. Oops that's too low.

I've always had low BP as did my mother. When I was pregnant another GP said I should be dead. Frankly I think that like cholesterol we all have different norms which a machine as vast as the NHS can't fathom.

LightSwerve · 16/02/2024 13:46

I thought it was normal for BP to be lower in the morning.

Your BP is normal on both readings. Take the readings back to your GP and ask for the next steps.

KatyMac · 16/02/2024 14:35

Well I have to do 7 days so I'll do a few more days using 3 readings (do I average them or take the slowest/highest?)

GP is already in a strop with me about cholesterol which I think is high because of thyroid problems so I wont take statins

OP posts:
TomeTome · 16/02/2024 14:44

Why are you refusing statins against doctors advice?

PieAndLattes · 16/02/2024 14:47

It’s also higher after eating, so if you’re taking it soon after an evening meal that might push it up. Leave it an hour first.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/02/2024 14:51

@TomeTome statins gave me a very weak wobbly leg almost immediately - within 2 days of stopping- it stopped. I understand why they are given but as mine was just for raised cholesterol I personally decided to try and bring it down a bit naturally - the really weak leg was awful

LIZS · 16/02/2024 14:51

Or take it before eating. Use the lowest of 3.

MysticalMegx · 16/02/2024 14:52

Blood pressure is higher when you have a fuller bladder, maybe it could be related to that?

KatyMac · 16/02/2024 14:59

Ive been taking it at bedtime, so maybe teatime/before tea might be better

& I'll watch my bladder

Lowest of 3 is doable

I'm refusing statins as I understand once my thyroid is medicated properly the cholesterol will come down naturally as my body will be in better balance

OP posts:
TomeTome · 16/02/2024 15:31

I think if your cholesterol levels are so high now regardless of the underlying cause you would be better taking the statins and protecting yourself from clogging up. There seems little logical reason to not take them while whatever other issues you have resolve.

Are you eating then taking your BP?
Think digestion makes it higher.

KatyMac · 16/02/2024 18:23

I ate at 4 tonight

So I'll try and take it at 11

I'd rather not experiment with 2 drugs at once; if I get better or worse how will I know which one it was

I increased my hrt oestrogen at the same time as starting testosterone and it took bloody ages to work out the oestrogen was the problem causing side effects. I'm on a lower dose now and it's fine

My husband was so ill on statins so they changed them, no improvement he had muscle weakness was so tired all the time this was years ago so sacked them off. He recovered. They're not for everyone.

KatyMac · 17/02/2024 08:58

This is what I have currently

The difference is quite marked, only the last 2 are best of 3

Higher blood pressure in the evening

Statins may not be for everyone but it’s kind of scary how many people think they are above their trained Gp, good luck op.
