Anyone help with sinusitus?

has anyone ever had sinusitus?

I've had severe headaches for a week now - the pressure is just on one side. I got some anti-bi's last week but today have had to go to the walk in clinic as the pain is so bad and constant that i am in tears. The gp said it is a bad case of sinusutus. I've had it before but never experienced pain like this before in my head - its been a week and it isnt easing. Is a ad case of sinusitus really this bad?
I've got some stronger anti-bi's today so lets hope they work.

oh no, dont say that - I'mrelying on it working! He gave me the higher dose 500mg and said it should clear - the ones i had before this were rubbish, didnt touch it.
Is this pain normal for sinusitus though? I knew it could be painful but didnt think it could be this horrendous!

Are you taking anything else for the pain?

I have chronic sinusitis. IME Amoxicillin helps. I am allergic to decongestants, so cant take sudafed, as it gives sever pain.

However, my worst case of sinusitis turned out to be a bad tooth. The pain was referring from a tooth that needed a root canal, and into my sinuses, causing a bacterial infection both in my cheeks and beyond my eyes.

Is your snot green horrid goo? Or maybe no goo at all? In which case I would say, go to the dentist (long shot I know, but thought I should mention it)

droopytits · 23/03/2008 15:23

thats the weird thing - i havent really got any snot - only in the morning and its atiny bot and clear!
My teeth are ok as i only went to the dentist last week .
I am taking paracetomol and nurofen for the pain and he gave me tramadol to take today.

So, what did you do at the dentist last week if you dont mind me ask?
Could the dentist have hit a nerve, and it takes a while to heal?

I get snot free sinusitis when my allergies are playing up, and I reach for my anti histamine tablets and my nasal spray.

droopytits · 23/03/2008 15:35

it was only a check up and i already had the pain when i went so dont think it is dental.

ouch!

I havent read all the answers so sorry if I repear anything. I had horrible sinusitis in Jan and was preg so limited on what I could have. I found Olbas oil to be really helpful. Both the nose inhlaers and the oil. I put a few drops of oil on tissue as well as regularly inhaling it from a bowl of warm water. The anti biotics didnt do much but perhaps it was viral?

expatinscotland · 23/03/2008 16:20

Buy a netti pot and irrigate your sinuses.

Twice a day during an attack, every other day otherwise.

Until you can get a netti pot, go the chemist and ask at the counter for Steri-Mar, you can irrigate your sinuses with that (the netti pot is much, much cheaper).

I used to suffer from sinusitis alot. I also use beconase. I was told that the pain and blocked up feeling can be caused by tissue inflamation and not snot. Beconase is steroid spray so it is anti inflammatory it really helped me more than abs. I now buy it otc as it is cheaper but it was originally prescribed by gp. Perhaps you could ask your gp about it.

Rolf · 23/03/2008 21:42

I get a couple of bouts of sinutisis each winter. Generally I treat it myself with painkillers and tea tree/steam inhalations, but sometimes it needs ABs to clear it. I find amoxycillin usually sorts it out.

I had a bad bout in December and was crying with the pain - never had that before. I've had the green snot (sorry ) worse in the past but the pain this time was just unbearable. It cleared up quite quickly once I had ABs.

Hope you feel better soon

QuintessentiallyAnEmptyCave · 24/03/2008 12:01

Does anybody know what is better, Beconase or Flixonase?

nightcat · 24/03/2008 15:51

Expat, thanx for mentioning Sterimar, sounds like it might help me.
As for netti, would you make up your own solution?

barking · 24/03/2008 15:55

I second Expatinscotland

Miracle cure for me.

netipots

barking · 24/03/2008 15:58

I use normal salt and very warm water.

I use to use the metal netipots but the nasopure gives a stronger jet of water to flush mucus out.

barking · 24/03/2008 16:01

Takes a while to get use to. I remember reading somewhere to make the "k" sound and shape with your tongue so the water doesn't go down your throat.
Hope that makes sense.

droopytits · 24/03/2008 18:23

Thanks for all your replies - its te first time I've heard of netipots - can somebody explain how they work and the benefits of them?

The antibiotics seem to be kicking in now and I am feeling so much better - I never want another bout of this in my life again!

Okay, this sounds a bit barking but I get terrible sinusitus and I find rubbing my feet really helps with the pain. Apply gentle pressure over the tops (not soles) of your feet until you find a really tender/sore spot (which I guarantee you will have) then very gently rub/massage the sore spot until it disappears. Keep doing this with any sore spots that you find (or better still get someone to do it for you). Also works for sore backs, headaches and assorted aches and pains.

Hope you feel better soon - it's a miserable thing to have.

RubberDuck · 24/03/2008 18:36

I use flixonase - because I find beconase has a nasty aftertaste that trickles down the back of your throat.

I now use flixonase at any slight sign of potential sinusitis after having a whole winter of getting attack after attack after every slight cold. I haven't had sinusitis since, so it definitely helped big time.
