High TSH, TTC, Levothyroxine

Hi all. Currently TTC (trying to conceive) but have recently been prescribed 50mcg of levothyroxine for high TSH levels; 9.1. Could anyone please tell me how long it will take for levels to stabilise? Thank you

It took me 12 months to conceive after starting it. Good luck 🤞🏻

Please can I ask what your levels were previous to starting the medication? I conceived in June and September but both unfortunately lead to a miscarriage so it appears conceiving wasn’t an issue, just the little beans sticking were!

50mcg in my opinion is not enough. Have they mentioned increasing it gradually? Ideally your tsh needs to get down to 1-2 for optimal health. In terms of conception I am sure plenty of people conceive and have a full term pregnancy with a higher tsh but my miscarriage specialist always said ideally uour tsh needs to be 1-2.

Yes, bloods are getting redone in 6 weeks to see how levels are looking then. We are desperate to have a baby especially after losing two.

I was on 50 until well into my pregnancy.

My TSH was 12.05

That’s really useful to know, hearing positive stories reassures me so much!

I was on around 50 iirc when we conceived #2. (hypothyroidism triggered by first pregnancy apparently). no problems conceiving and our GP monitored my bloods very closely throughout. they also wanted me to have bloods checked before we ttc or right at the beginning of the pregnancy (ie before the 8 week midwife contact) but I cant remember which. either way it all went OK and I had my dose of levothyroxine changed all the way through based on bloods.

@lochmaree that’s really positive to hear!

I've had 2 babies and have hypothyroidism. My 1st pregnancy ended in miscarriage, my tsh was 16.8! 2nd pregnancy took over a year to conceive, as soon as I found out I was pregnant I upped my thyroxine by 25mcg as baby doesn't produce its own thyroxine natually until you are 16 weeks pregnant, you need to have blood tests throughout the pregnancy to check your tsh and t4 levels, they need to ideally be around 1 or 2. My 3rd pregnancy took just under a year to conceive and again I increased my thyroxine by 25mcg as soon as I found out and was monitored closely. Good luck

Thank you that’s great to hear, we’re going to start trying again in March, just going to give my body a chance to adjust to the levothyroxine and get the levels down!
