Knee problems

I have just turned 38 and for the past 6 months or so I've been experiencing pain in both my knees when going up and down stairs/slopes/hills etc.

The right is worse than the left and I'm now also getting a random sensation of intense heat inside it, this is happening around 10 times a day and last for a few minutes.

I have made a doctors appt but typically it's not for weeks and then no doubt Il be waiting months for a referral.

Has anyone experienced the same or similar and can give me some reassurance?

I work a very physically demanding job that I love and am worried it will mean I will have to change role.

How are your feet, OP? My knee pain was triggered by (undiagnosed) flat feet. I now have to wear orthoses in my shoes to correct my foot alignment. The damage to my knees thus far is, unfortunately, not reversible but the orthoses ensure they don't deteriorate further. And careful exercises has allowed me to build leg and core muscles to help protect my knees....

Oh that's interesting.....I had foot issues around 10yrs ago and had to wear insoles for a while.

How was it diagnosed?

44 year old with chronic knee probs. Thought it was my rheumatoid arthritis as there was heat and swelling but it turns out it's my hypermobility and my ankles turning as I walk. Visit to orthotics and my 3d printed insoles arrived this week. I am walking differently and have aches in brand new places, but they are helping- I'm standing totally differently.

Ah so it's your feet also that have caused the issue? Can I ask how they discovered it was your feet and not your knees?
Have they offered any treatment other than insoles?

I showed my rheumatologist my knee and he pointed out it was pointing in completely the wrong direction. Grin

I had an MRI to check nothing hideous was going on and then he referred me to orthotics. I had a lovely chat with the lady and she pointed out how my hypermobile ankles meant they were twisting slightly inwards which put pressure on all my other joints. She took an impression of my feet so I could have personalised insoles to keep my ankles steady.

I asked her about the eldest child as he is very hypermobile and walks like a penguin and she said that any pain in knees or hips might very well be down to dodgy ankles and he could go to the gp who could refer onto orthotics.

When I had awful knee pain in my early 20s, I was referred to physio. After several years with no change, I saw a different physio. They asked why I had been having knee treatment when the pain was caused by an unstable sacroiliac joint.

As PPs have said, it may not be your knees giving you problems!

Thanks for the replies. I will see what the doctor suggests.

They've been less painful over the past few days, I have been less active so I'm assuming it's due to that.

My knee pain was caused by a misalignment of my pelvis - I use a mctimoney chiropractor every 6-9 months and it keeps on top of the issues x
