Should I just discharge myself??

I was admitted about 10 days feeling shakey (legs and arms) and with a bad headache and sore throat. I should also mention I have some mental health issues. So a fair few issues and they thought it might be something underlying especially as I'd just returned from Asia.

I've just had an ultrasound yesterday to check internal organs etc and it was fine. Had bloods taken which should be back today. I'm no longer displaying any symptoms. No flu or COVID.

Frankly after coming here almost directly off a 40 hour flight (with a stressful stopover in China) I just want my own bed pets and husband. They have me woken several times a night for blood pressure tests etc which have always been normal plus a vitamins drip. I struggle with sleep at the best of times and this is just making me feel so much worse.

If the bloods are normal can l just walk out? This is a normal hospital BTW not mental health.

I guess I'm worried they'll just finding more and more things to check. Also feels like such a waste of resources!

I would ask a doctor first why you're still there.

No one EVER gets kept in for no reason. The discharge coordinators and bed managers are literally harassing ward staff all day for who can be discharged.

Yes I second this. Its very unusual for anyone to be admitted/kept in beyond the bare minimum at the moment (even that's debatable). I'd ask them to explain why you're still in, what specific concerns they have and if there's a plan. It could be that they're following protocol for ??infectious disease given your travel, or it might be that they're stumped but you could be discharged with safety netting and further tests arranged. I would advise against self discharge personally until you've had it explained and can make an informed decision at the very least.

Yeah, they said bloods 'mainly' and to.make sure I'm stable in my OBs. No idea how long OBs take to assess.

I think they're also keeping an eye on my mental health for some reason but (a) that was years and years ago and (b) being here is starting to make those negative thoughts come back!

I'm not even on a ward, I have my own room. Surely that should go to someone in more need and they could keep in touch by phone etc?

i would tell the consultant you are planning to leave unless there’s anything else they would like to check? Express that sleeping is an issue and you’d rest better in your own bed at home. I suspect they are being very thorough for a reason

I would speak to the doctor and find out what they are investigating for. Ask if they have a virtual ward or something similar, where you can be discharged home u see there care still for any ongoing tests etc.

You’ve been in your own room for 10 days, I suspect they suspect maybe an infection, that’s normally the only reason you’re in your own room, I would wait for blood tests results. I doubt it’s to do with mental health unless you’ve had the mental health team access you in the time you’ve been there. Hopefully you will be ok to go home soon. My cousin has been in hospital for 5 weeks, in a discharge ward for nearly 2 weeks waiting for social care to sort out care package. Everything seems to take so long.

As @Mindymomo says, the fact you are still in a side room means they are very likely thinking something infectious. Your symptoms improving doesn’t mean you aren’t, many infectious diseases will go through different phases of symptoms. I did a stint as a nursing bed manager years ago, before the NHS really started collapsing, and believe me, even then no one is just left in a side room that long if there’s not a clinical reason, as they are always in very high demand for lots of different issues.

It would be much better to ask what the plan is, and then if they want you to stay, then at least wait until later tomorrow if you can, as it will only be the on call teams around over the weekend, but all teams will be back in tomorrow, and so you will then get a thorough idea of what’s happening. I really hope you get the all clear soon op💐
