How does a private GP work?

Through work I get access to a private GP. I also have private health insurance, which also offers a private GP service.

I have a common ailment that will require antibiotics. If I go to the private GP, I presume I have to pay for the pills myself? How much would this cost (roughly)?

For most generic meds, it's the same price (or cheaper) than a NHS prescription. If they're relatively new drugs / still under patent, they can be much more expensive.

With a private GP you have to pay for all medications and blood tests etc yourself. Medications are usually quite cheap but of course it depends what it is, some more uncommon ones can be quite expensive. Last time DD needed antibiotics and anti-emetics for an ear infection it only came to around £6. Blood tests are often pricey and really mount up!

We have access to a private GP but only tend to use it if it’s something particularly complicated or urgent. For run of the mill things it makes more sense to use the NHS

It’s the cost of the pharmacy rather than GP. A private prescription for me is £15.

Just to check as well - my insurance there is a yearly excess of £150 if use BUT does have free access to virtual GP where would just pay prescription charge. (Without paying excess).
